McCauley named Penn State Hosler Alumni Scholar<br />

Penn State’s College of Earth and<br />

Mineral Sciences has named James W.<br />

McCauley the recipient of the 2011<br />

Charles L. Hosler Alumni Scholar<br />

Medal. McCauley is a chief scientist<br />

and Fellow at the Army Research<br />

Laboratory in Aberdeen, Md., the<br />

highest ranking scientific position at<br />

ARL.<br />

McCauley earned his MS in mineralogy<br />

and PhD in solid-state science<br />

from Penn State in 1965 and 1968,<br />

respectively. From 1968 to 1990, he<br />

served as a scientist, branch chief and<br />

division chief at the Army Materials<br />

and Mechanics Research Center and<br />

Materials Technology Laboratory. He<br />

then served for five years as professor<br />

of ceramic engineering and dean<br />

of the New York State College of<br />

Ceramics at Alfred University before<br />

rejoining the Army as senior ceramic<br />

materials research engineer in 1996.<br />

McCauley is best known for his<br />

invention of aluminum oxynitride,<br />

a transparent ceramic. He also was<br />

instrumental in pioneering research<br />

for synthesizing non-oxide ceram-<br />

ics, in which he united international<br />

research efforts, especially with Russia<br />

and Japan.<br />

McCauley has served The<br />

American Ceramic Society in many<br />

roles, including president in 1988.<br />

He is a Distinguished Life Member,<br />

the highest award bestowed upon a<br />

member of the Society. His scientific<br />

contributions have been recognized<br />

with the Norton, Mueller,<br />

Friedberg and the McLaren awards.<br />

In 1990, he received the Prometheus<br />

Award from the National Institute<br />

for Materials Science in Tsukuba,<br />

Japan, and a Jubilee medal from<br />

the Russian Academy of Sciences,<br />

Chernogolovka, Russia, in October<br />

2007. In 2007, he received the Senior<br />

Scientific–Professional (ST) Employee<br />

Presidential Rank Award.<br />

Penn State established the Charles<br />

L. Hosler Alumni Scholar Medal in<br />

1992 to recognize the highest levels of<br />

intellectual achievement attained by<br />

those educated in its College of Earth<br />

and Mineral Sciences. n<br />

Pittsburgh Section golf<br />

event benefits students<br />

The 2011 Pittsburgh Section Golf<br />

Outing was held Monday, Sept. 12,<br />

2011, at the Lenape Heights Golf<br />

Course in Ford City, Pa. This year’s<br />

event was a great success, and the winners<br />

were Mark Rhoa and Mike Kozlow<br />

of Chiz Brothers Inc.; Tom Mulholland<br />

of Utah Refractories; and Gary Harper<br />

with Unifrax. Proceeds from the event<br />

support the Section’s J. Earl Frazier<br />

Memorial Scholarship fund.<br />

The putting contest winner, Jeff<br />

Buszinski of Swindell Dressler, walked<br />

away with the prize of a ceramic putter.<br />

Special thanks goes to Alton<br />

Johnson, a 50+ year member of The<br />

American Ceramic Society, who<br />

donated his collection of Drakenfeld<br />

glasses from previous annual meetings<br />

for participants to take as a memento<br />

from the outing.<br />
