Everyone is called to be a servant to their neighbors.
That could be as practical as giving someone a bag of
groceries or as compassionate as offering a listening
ear and a warm smile during a time of need.
For 140 years, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has
been a servant to Greater Cincinnati’s needy families.
Answering Christ’s call, we foster hope by providing
spiritual, emotional and material assistance on a
person-to-person basis to the poor, lonely and forgotten
in our community,
regardless of race or
religious affiliation.
With hundreds of
volunteers logging
over 68,000 hours
of service, we per-
sonally connect with those in need throughout our
neighborhoods in Greater Cincinnati and Hamilton
County. Together, we bring hope home.
In 2008, the Cincinnati Council of
St. Vincent de Paul was blessed to receive
the Better Business Bureau’s Torch Award
recognizing workplace ethics.
Dear Friends,
Last year was filled with uncertainty, setbacks and misfortunes for local
families. Gas prices spiked, the cost of food soared and a major windstorm
blew through Cincinnati. Then the economic crisis hit and our city’s suffering
grew. We saw the effects first hand as the number of calls for help escalated
at an alarming rate. At times, we were not sure how we could respond to
so much need.
Among the extreme circumstances — the layoffs, home repairs and general
cost of living increases — there were also illnesses, injuries and unexpected
expenses that set many families back financially. Those living paycheck to
paycheck, teetering on the edge of poverty, suddenly found themselves facing
eviction. Working class families found themselves wondering where their next
meal would come from. Neighbors already struggling in poverty now found
themselves sleeping in shelters.
But through the despair, hope shone through. In 2008, St. Vincent de Paul
volunteers and donors touched the lives of more than 81,000 people. Often a
little help at the right moment was all that was needed to get someone back
on their feet. Individuals, the elderly, parents and children were clothed, fed
and given shelter. Families needing a hand up were given practical support,
a prayer, and the hope to press on.
You brought hope home. You
changed lives. And we thank you.
Kathryn
Kathryn held close the philosophy that
a little hard work goes a long way. She
always thought she could pull herself out
of any situation. For months she endured
mental and physical abuse from her husband,
hoping to hold her family together
for her son, Sean. The day her husband hit
Sean, she made the decision to leave. In
the middle of the night Kathryn took Sean
and fled. They hid in a cemetery for two
days until a shelter could take them in.
Starting a new life was a daunting task.
Kathryn and Sean had left everything behind
— toys, clothing, furniture, friends
and family. The shelter helped Kathryn
and Sean find an apartment, but there
was nothing to make it a home.
Not knowing where else to turn, Kathryn
came to St. William’s St. Vincent de Paul
Conference where she received help
with food, beds, and household items.
“Thank you just seems so very insignificant
for all you have done for us,” Kathryn
said. “My hope was gone. My spirit
broken. I truly felt as if all I could do is
let my son down. What you all do for
people like us is just so wonderful. My
prayers have been answered. Thank you
for giving my hope back to me.”
Home Visits
“St. Vincent de Paul was a God send.
The people that work here are so caring
and wonderful. I love them all.”
Community programs
Right now, somewhere in Cincinnati, two St. Vincent de Paul members are knocking
on the door of someone they have never met, but who has called them in desperate
need. The door opens, and they may find an elderly man who has been sleeping
on a chair because his fixed income does not cover the cost of a bed. Or a mother
of three, who huddles with her children under a blanket to keep warm because their
electricity was turned off after she lost her job.
These visits give us
a heartfelt and personal
understanding of the needs
of the families we meet. Often when we respond to a call for help with furniture, we
find the kitchen cabinets are empty, the electricity has been turned off or a baby is in
need of medicine. We meet the immediate need, and then work toward a long term
solution to self-sufficiency.
Last year St. Vincent de Paul made 7,791 home
visits to families who needed not a hand out,
but a hand up out of a devastating situation.
For years Cassandra worked in food
services at a hospital. She enjoyed her
work and was able to provide for her
daughter, Jessie. Then her hours were
cut and it was a challenge to afford basic
necessities.
As the bills began to pile up, Cassandra
and Jessie moved into a smaller apartment.
Unfortunately, many pieces of
their furniture were severely damaged
in the move. Unable to afford new beds,
Cassandra
they borrowed a leaky air mattress to
use until the cost of new beds fit into
Cassandra’s budget. For the moment,
the most immediate need was that
Cassandra could not afford to buy her
growing daughter clothing or provide
towels and other household items that
were lost in the move.
In her moment of struggle, Cassandra
came to St. Vincent de Paul where she
received a voucher to shop at the thrift
stores for the things she most needed.
“It’s been rough on me, trying to care for
my daughter like this,” Cassandra said, “I
do all I can and pray and keep going day
by day.”
Thrift
Stores
St. Vincent de Paul Thrift
Stores are busy places,
providing basic necessities
at no cost on an emergency
basis to Cincinnatians
struggling to make ends
meet. In one of the aisles, a young mother finally gets pots and pans to cook for her
children. In the shoe department, a child excitedly picks out a new pair of shoes.
Outside, an elderly woman smiles as a bed is loaded for delivery to her home.
Others on a fixed income regularly shop our stores for necessities. They can’t afford
even discount store prices, but the thrift store items fit right into their budgets.
Thanks to our thrift stores and the many people who donate their gently used items,
families are able to find the basics they need.
In 2008, 5,263 families were given clothing
and household items through our emergency
relief program.
“The staff goes above and beyond to
meet the needs of the people. One day,
I would love to give back and volunteer.
Thanks for everything you’ve done.”
Jack & Debbie
Jack and Debbie take pride in living simply
but independently. They were happy
together in their modest 2-bedroom
apartment.
Then, a change in management at Debbie’s
job resulted in two years of harassment,
leaving Debbie in an unstable
condition. When Jack became aware of
the situation, he downsized their apartment
so Debbie could quit her job. But
it was soon apparent that Debbie was
not recovering.
In time, a psychiatrist prescribed a combination
of medications that returned
Debbie to her old self again. But Jack
and Debbie could not afford the medication.
Individual insurance coverage
would cost over $1400 a month and
just three of the eight prescriptions cost
$360, even with the insurance plan.
Jack and Debbie attended financial
counseling, where they were advised
to declare bankruptcy. Not wanting to
take that option, Jack pawned jewelry
that once belonged to his mother. But
that only made a small dent in the many
doctor and hospital bills that had piled
up. Without her medication, Debbie
began to slide back into depression and
became suicidal.
In their moment of deepest need, they
came to St. Vincent de Paul for help.
“We didn’t expect the help because I
receive some income from a part-time
job,” Jack said when told seven of Debbie’s
eight prescriptions would be filled
at no-charge. “Things happened so
quickly here. We thought it would be a
Charitable Pharmacy
drawn out process. It makes us realize
people do help and people do care. We
don’t know who the donors are, but we
are grateful for the help.”
Now, Jack and Debbie hope to move on
with their lives, “We just want to care for
ourselves again,” Jack said.
Tucked away in a corner of our West End offices, the Charitable Pharmacy is saving
lives. Heart attack survivors, diabetic patients and many others faced with the added
expense of a costly medication are forced to choose between affording medication
or other basic necessities like food or rent. But through the glass window of the
Charitable Pharmacy, a licensed pharmacist hands someone a plastic bag with their
life-saving medication and answers any questions they may have about the prescription.
And suddenly, their hope is revived.
In 2008, the Charitable Pharmacy filled
18,562 prescriptions valued at $1,816,091.
“The Pharmacy has been a life saver for me.
The people here have been very courteous
to me, helpful, and kind hearted. I hope
this program does not stop. I know of no
other program like this one.”
Leanne
Leanne has devoted her life to caring
for her two sons, ages 3 and 5. She lives
paycheck to paycheck, but has always
been very careful about staying within
her budget.
But when the children’s father tried to
re-enter their lives, he became abusive.
Leanne was afraid to be in her own home
where he could find her and the children.
Then Leanne also found out her youngest
son had developed a brain tumor.
In her moment of desperation, Leanne
came to St. Vincent de Paul for help, “I
can’t fully take care of my son’s health
when worrying about our safety,” she
said. Leanne wanted to move to a place
where her abuser would never find her,
but she needed help with the deposit.
A St. Vincent de Paul client advocate
listened to Leanne’s story, promised help
to get the new apartment and prayed
with her. Leanne and her 3-year-old
son grasped the hands of this stranger
who was there in their time of need and
prayed for guidance, protection and healing.
Leanne’s son squeezed his eyes tight
and nodded, somehow knowing what
was at stake. “Thank you Jesus,” Leanne
prayed in that moment when she knew
she could lay down her old fears in order
to face the new challenges in her life.
Fighting Homelessness
St. Vincent de Paul’s help is diverse and far-reaching. It can be seen in our West End
offices where a staff member prays with a single father deeply relieved that he no
longer has to sleep with his son in the backseat of a car. Or in St. Vincent de Paul
members visiting a young couple needing help with a deposit on a smaller apartment
after being laid off. More often it begins in prevention by helping to pay a bill to keep
electricity turned on or give a family running water once again. The assistance given
at St. Vincent de Paul is not empty charity, but emotional healing with practical help
and a step toward regaining self-sufficiency.
In 2008, 3,573 families received assistance to
be able to stay in their homes.
“I am very thankful for
St. Vincent de Paul. I don’t know what
I would have done without their help.”
Mike & Susan
When Mike pictured his life, he never
thought there would be a time when he
couldn’t provide for his family. His wife,
Susan, drove school buses and he had
always worked in packaging plants. Mike
didn’t particularly enjoy his job, but his
sense of devotion to his wife and four
children motivated him to work hard.
Summertime was hard when Susan
wasn’t working, but they always managed
to save a little during the school
year to help keep them on top of bills.
Then, Mike lost his job due to budget
cuts just weeks after Susan stopped
working for the summer. Two months
went by and Mike still couldn’t find
work. Affording even food became
impossible.
When Mike couldn’t ask family and
friends for help any longer, he turned to
St. Vincent de Paul. For three months,
Mike visited the West End food pantry in
order to give his family food. That was all
the help he needed until he found a new
full-time job and was back on his feet.

Choice Food
Pantry
It looks like a miniature grocery store with
its metal shelves, grocery carts and brown
paper bags, but it’s much more. The Edyth
and Carl Lindner Choice Food Pantry is where
a father, just laid off, has found a way feed his
family right now. It is where a woman on a fixed income receives enough food to last
the rest of the week. It is a place where neighbors meet with neighbors; where only a
name badge separates volunteers from those in need; a place where hope begins.
Along with the Edyth and Carl Lindner
Choice Food Pantry, St. Vincent de Paul oper-
ates 6 parish-based food pantries and many
food closets to feed the hungry in virtually
every corner of Cincinnati and Hamilton
County. In 2008, over 50,000 people received
not just a bag of groceries, but the strength to
continue on through a tough situation.
“I’m so blessed. The help saved my life. To my friends
Operation Bootstrap Job Readiness Program
When illness, injury or budget cuts result in a lost job, it can be overwhelming to
begin searching for employment. Operation Bootstrap provides computer training
and job interview experience as well as motivational speakers to set individuals on
In 2008, 45 participants graduated from Operation Bootstrap and many
Adopt-A-Family
When budgets are tight, the Christmas season can be difficult for parents. Not being
able to give a child a gift on Christmas morning is heartbreaking. The Adopt-A-Family
program brings families of economic stability together with struggling families to
make sure that every child has a gift to open.
In 2008, 237 families consisting of 649 people were “adopted” by their
neighbors and given gifts for Christmas. Across the city 6,025 families
receive holiday food or gifts at Thanksgiving or Christmas.
5 Cares Coat Drive
The harshness of winter can be unbearable without a coat. The 5 Cares Coat Drive
and Carns Coats for Kids provide hundreds of coats each winter to those who cannot
afford to purchase one. Not only are people given a coat, but they are able to pick
out one that fits their personality and style. Children smile as they walk out our doors
wearing a coat in their favorite color or with their favorite sports team logo.
In 2008, 5,352 coats were collected, thanks to the generosity of the com-
munity, the Karen Carnes Foundation and our partners WLWT Channel
5, City Dash, Gold Star Chili and local fire stations.
Fan and Air Conditioner Drive
Each year children, the elderly and those with medical problems suffer terribly in
the summer heat. Many older apartments in Cincinnati have poor ventilation and
no cooling systems, making the summer months unbearable. The annual Fan Drive
brings relief to families that could not otherwise afford a fan or air conditioner.
In 2008, 510 fans and 70 air conditioners were collected and distributed,
bringing comfort in the summer heat. Thank you to the community and
Kroger & Fox 19 Food From the Heart
When families are surviving paycheck to paycheck, an unexpected expense, illness or
lay off can be devastating. St. Vincent de Paul feeds more than 50,000 people each
year, so it is a challenge to keep shelves stocked with nutritious food. Often staples
like bread, cereal and protein products are the first that run out. Non-perishables donated
by the community to Food From the Heart is given directly to families in need
by St. Vincent de Paul pantries and home visit teams throughout Greater Cincinnati.
In 2008, 66,675 pounds of food was collected, thanks to the community
