6 I Singapore Shipping Association President’s Report SSA members are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the current economic slowdown and generous funding to send their staff for retraining and upgrading under these SSA courses. The Association’s eNewsletter, “Waves”, entered its 3rd year with the release of the 18th issue published in May this year. The SSA is a close partner with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF), the Workforce Development Agency (WDA), the National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) and other related organisations to foster the continued development of Singapore as an international maritime centre. Through this strong and strategic partnership, the Association is able to initiate educational and social networking events for the benefi t of the members. Through the WDA and the NTUC, courses under the SSA Executive Development Programme have been accorded 90% subsidies under the Skills Programme for Upgrading and Resilience (SPUR). SSA members are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the current economic slowdown and generous funding to send their staff for retraining and upgrading under these SSA courses. To cope with the strong demand, new courses and more runs of the existing SSA courses have been scheduled. With such support from the government, coupled with the traditional resilience of Singapore’s shipping industry, I would like to urge our members to try their best to retain their staff and resort to retrenchment only as a measure of last resort. The Association is also pro-active in voicing industry concerns to MPA. The SSA was very much involved in the highly successful SeaAsia event in April 2009. Conclusion The SSA is fortunate to have dedicated and committed members willing to serve on the Council, the various Committees and Sub-Committees. As this is our election year, I wish to take this opportunity to thank all of them for their hard work, dedication and excellent support in promoting the interests of the SSA. I am grateful for what they had done as a team to advance the well-being of your Association. I would like to thank all members of the Association for their continued support. Last but not least, I would also like to thank the Secretariat for the effi cient discharge of their duties.
