new substation at Macarthur
TransGrid has recently completed construction of a
new $50 million substation at Macarthur to reinforce
electricity supply in the rapidly developing south West
sydney region.
The new substation will provide sydney’s south West region with enough power to
supply 100,000 homes and businesses. Two state-of-the-art transformers have been
installed and a custom made road was built off the Hume Highway to ensure the
transformers reached the site.
The project involved extensive civil and landscaping works. The close proximity of a
number of other utilities in the area plus the difficult slope of the site required innovative
designs to achieve an effective outcome.
The project was subject to extensive community consultation. a comprehensive
environmental investigation was made before construction began, which took into
account the proximity of construction to the Mount annan botanic Gardens. With the help
of gardens’ staff during the planning process, TransGrid established a landscape plan for
the area around the substation. The native flora has provided a natural habitat for wildlife.
a range of efficient techniques were employed in the project, some of which included
the utilisation of a very compact layout for the substation and the painting of higher steel
structures and the transformer sound walls to reduce noise impacts.
The new substation employed over 100 local contractors during its construction and is a
big part of TransGrid’s annual capital works program.
Macarthur substation is one of the most modern substation’s on TransGrid’s network with
the latest advances in safety, security and environmental protection.
