2012 annual report

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE
Over the past year, 1175 teens in 71 communities around
our state gained a better understanding of their roles and
responsibilities as citizens through the Y’s Youth & Government
programs. Thank you for joining us!
We believe the values and skills gained in young adulthood
are vital building blocks for lifelong community engagement.
In an op-ed published in the fall of 2011, Washington
Secretary of State Sam Reed had this to say about the
skills teens gain through their participation in Y&G programs:
Youth Legislature delegates build confidence and hone
their research, writing and public speaking skills while
developing a better understanding of their power as
citizens in a democracy.
This understanding of the issues, and the skills to develop
solutions, will carry with Y&G alums into their adult lives.
It will also create better informed citizens - people who will
one day become the neighbors in our communities and the
leaders of our state. This is why Youth & Government has
made strengthening communities a primary cause.
In 2011, we hosted a community event in Spokane that
brought together educators, public officials, business leaders
and local alumni. The result of the connections made
was a multi-year partnership between Y&G and the YMCA of
the Inland Northwest. Our collaborative efforts now provide
local staff support to new and expanding Y&G programs.
This past June we hosted a similar gathering in Stevenson,
seeking to develop new and innovative ways to engage
community leaders and educate local teens.
All of this would not have been possible without your generous
financial support. As a result of another successful
fundraising campaign, we were able to welcome students
to participate in our programs regardless of their ability to
pay. Teens received over $12,000 in individual financial
assistance, and programs east of the Cascades received
grant funding to assist with travel expenses, activity fees,
and staffing costs associated with operational growth and
development.
Youth and Government is truly a Washington success
story. It is built upon a premise that it is the responsibility
of teens to learn the principals of democracy. Equally
as important, however, is our duty as adults to teach those
principals and foster an ethic of service and social responsibility
in the next generation. Thank you again for your
support. Your efforts help to ensure that the future of our
state is passed to a group of leaders dedicated to service
and committed to democracy.
