Professional correspondence is generally filed elsewhere. (*PERMISSION FROM RUTH FIRST TRUST REQUIRED) 4 boxes 117/1/3/1 Joe Slovo 1960-1978 Letters containing details of Slovo's detention, First's work, the struggle against apartheid, family matters etc. 150 items 117/1/3/1/1* Joe Slovo's period of detention 06 Apr 1960-18 Jul 1960 Slovo was detained in March 1960 soon after the Sharpeville massacre and the declaration of a state of emergency, and released six months later. The file contains 19 of his handwritten letters to First and the children, addressed from gaols in Johannesburg and Pretoria and 21 of First's replies addressed from her house in Johannesburg, which have been given numbers up to 24. Most have been checked by government censors. 40 items 117/1/3/1/2* Before and after First's detention 12 Jul 1963-03 Mar 1964 Letters written by First to Slovo immediately before and after her imprisonment under the 90-Day law. Some are addressed to 'Mr.H.Watson'. 18 items 117/1/3/1/3* Joe Slovo's exile 1965-1978 Slovo left South Africa in 1963 on instructions from the South African Congress Party and the African National Congress, and did not return to the country until 1990. He spent his exile years living in the UK, Angola, Mozambique and Zambia. The file contains letters from Slovo to First written from London, Dar es Salaam, Lusaka, Luanda and Maputo. Most are handwritten as aerogrammes or on writing paper. Also included are copies of poems, probably by Slovo. 29 items 117/1/3/1/4* First's travels in Africa 1967-1968 Letters from First to Slovo and their children written from Egypt, Sudan, Nigeria and other locations. 23 items 117/1/3/1/5* First at the University of Durham 1973 Letters from First to Slovo during the early part of her time as a lecturer and a postcard of Trevelyan College where she was based. 5 items 117/1/3/1/6* First at the University of Dar es Salaam 1975 Letters from First to Slovo written during her secondment from Durham University. 12 items 117/1/3/1/7* First in Durham and London 1976-1978 Letters from First to Slovo written whilst she was working at Durham University, but letters are often addressed from London where she spent weekends. 23 items Archives and Special Collections – Ruth First Papers
