First was the Johannesburg editor between 1946 and the paper's banning in 1952. It was published weekly in Cape Town under the editorship of Betty Radford and then Brian Bunting. 4 volumes and 8 other items 117/1/4/1/1 Scrapbook of cuttings Feb 1947-Feb 1948 Subjects covered include SACP affairs, trade unions, protests and strikes, townships, apartheid legislation and law and order. Contains some material from other publications such as Inkululeko, Passive Resister and the Democrat. Includes reports by First on the 'World Federation of Democratic Youth', printed in the Passive Resister (19 Jun 1947) and 'Fascism at the City Hall Steps', printed in the Democrat (Oct 1947). 1 volume 117/1/4/1/2 Scrapbook of cuttings Feb 1948-July 1948 Subjects covered include the 1948 general election campaign and trade union affairs. Includes the following articles by First: 'Why are Cypriots 'Undesirable'?' (nd) and 'Harrismith: Why Trouble is Brewing There'(01 Apr 1948) and some loose cuttings. 1 volume 117/1/4/1/3 Scrapbook of cuttings Aug 1948-Sep 1949 Subjects covered include reaction to apartheid policies, African labour and trade unions. Includes reports by First on the Orlando train disaster, protests at the University of Witwatersrand, 'Johannesburg's Slave Market', the crisis in Bechuanaland, and the Johannesburg tram boycott, all from 1949. Some cuttings are loose inside the volume. 1 volume 117/1/4/1/4 Scrapbook of cuttings Sep 1949-Mar 1950 Subjects covered include the Trades and Labour Council, apartheid laws and labour conditions. Includes reports by First on 'The Slave Market in Johannesburg', 'Africans killed in police raids', 'Forced Labour for rand mines', pass laws and Bethal farm labourers. Some cuttings are undated. 30 items approx. 117/1/4/1/10 Background material [1950s] Typescript copies of pieces probably written by First to assist with work for the Guardian. Includes drafts of a report on labour recruiting, general information about South Africa and the history of the pass laws. 3 items 117/1/4/2 Clarion 10 Jul 1952–07 Aug 1952 Publication which replaced the Guardian when that paper was banned, but was itself outlawed after two months. It was published weekly in Cape Town and First was the Johannesburg editor. 10 items 117/1/4/2/1 Loose cuttings 10 Jul 1952-07 Aug 1952 Subjects covered include a call for a national strike by Cecil Williams, reaction to the Suppression of Communism Act, the acquittal of Michael Harmel, and raids carried out by the South African CID. Much of the material was probably written by First. 10 items 117/1/4/3 People's World 23 Oct 1952-30 Oct 1952 The successor to the Guardian and Clarion after each paper had, in turn, been banned by the South African government. The newspaper was itself banned after two months. It was published weekly in Cape Town and First was the Johannesburg editor. 5 items 117/1/4/3/1 Loose cuttings 23 Oct 1952-30 Oct 1952 Subjects covered include protests in Port Elizabeth and the Transvaal, and government reaction to the defiance campaign.
