Produced <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> South African Communist Party (SACP). <strong>First</strong> was<br />

<strong>the</strong> Johannesburg editor between 1946 and <strong>the</strong> paper's banning in<br />

1952. It was published weekly in Cape Town under <strong>the</strong> editorship <strong>of</strong><br />

Betty Radford and <strong>the</strong>n Brian Bunting.<br />

some <strong>material</strong> from o<strong>the</strong>r publications such as Inkululeko, Passive<br />

Resister and <strong>the</strong> Democrat. Includes reports <strong>by</strong> <strong>First</strong> on <strong>the</strong> 'World<br />

Federation <strong>of</strong> Democratic Youth', printed in <strong>the</strong> Passive Resister (19<br />

Jun 1947) and 'Fascism at <strong>the</strong> City Hall Steps', printed in <strong>the</strong><br />

Democrat (Oct 1947).<br />

'Johannesburg's Slave Market', <strong>the</strong> crisis in Bechuanaland, and <strong>the</strong><br />

Johannesburg tram boycott, all from 1949. Some cuttings are loose<br />

inside <strong>the</strong> volume.<br />
