Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London ii PREFACE Ruth First, journalist, author, anti-apartheid campaigner, lecturer, communist, feminist, not to mention wife and mother, occupies a prominent place in the history of the fight against the fascist regime which governed South Africa and oppressed the black majority for so long. Her life was devoted to the struggle, whether it was through her editorship of newspapers which the government sought to ban, her work for political organisations, her imprisonment and subsequent exile, her commitment to revealing the true nature of the country of her birth to the rest of the world, or finally through her murder. This catalogue constitutes a list of the collection of her personal papers deposited by the Ruth First Memorial Trust at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, London. The main body of the catalogue consists of comprehensive descriptions of the material. At the front of the catalogue readers will also find a list of material which I have picked out as being of particular interest. This, inevitably, involved making extremely subjective decisions of what constitutes ‘interesting’ material so should be taken as a rough guide only. Nevertheless I hope that it may prove helpful to some users of what is a large and varied collection. A handlist of the numerous correspondence files can also be found immediately before the catalogue, and indices of individuals, locations and subjects described in the catalogue can be found at the rear. The Ruth First Memorial Trust welcomes proposals for further deposits of material, not only relating to Ruth First, but also to southern Africa and the Liberation Movement. A selection of the papers of Mary Benson was bequeathed to the Trust in 2000, and is also housed at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies. As the archivist responsible for the production of this list, I would like to thank the Ruth First Memorial Trust and the University of London for their financial support for the project and all of the staff at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies for their general assistance.
