The Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani is responsible for Benetton's striking
advertising aesthetic. When his advertising campaign for death row inmates was
premiered in the US in 1999, it provoked a storm of protest which led to the
large American chain store Sears to cancel a multi-million dollar order for
Benetton clothing. This in turn led to his sacking from the company.
