This four-part history of country music begins with its origins in the remote
mountains of the American rural south. Traces its journey from the Appalachians
down into the world of recordings and commerce. Covers the period from the 1930s,
through the decades to the turn of the century. Through good times and bad times,
country music has evolved and come into its own, sustained by its theme of
reality, harmony and natural beauty. Its hilly-billy image is now gone and it is
embraced nationally. The commercial home of country music is Nashville, while
Blue Grass music is a statement about roots, built on a sound, a heart and a
spirit. Features traditional country musicians with their roots in America's
mythic past, such as, Ralph Stanley and his Blue Grass music; the Carter Family;
and the Louvin Brothers. Closely associated with Nashville is Hank Williams, the
most revered icon in country music history. Then there is Johnny Cash, the
'outsider' who became a country legend. By the mid-1990s, female artists have
emerged into a position of complete autonomy and self-sufficiency, like Gillian
Welch who owns her own recording company. Includes selected archival footage of
gigs showing highlights of performances by the great names in U.S. country
music. Includes also extensive interviews with country musicians for comments
and a sharing of knowledge and personal narratives.
Episode 1 is the story of how country music journeyed down from the mountains
and came to be recorded on discs, enabling it to reach beyond the Appalachian
Mountains. Episode 2 is about how country music squandered the legacy of its
greatest star, Hank Williams, just as he had squandered his own life. Episode 3
tells the story of the outsiders who have taken country music beyond Nashville;
and episode 4 is the story of how the women of country music fought to gain
control of their identity, their songs, their sovereignty, and the future of
country itself.
