<strong>View</strong> vdesign 14 It was only a year ago that Mo Goodfield, searching in vain for jewellery to wear to a Christmas party, gave up and decided to make her own instead. Unable to find anything in her price-range that caught her eye, she went home, made what she wanted and in the process triggered a passion that saw her spending the entire Christmas break playing around with further pieces, researching materials and methods on the internet, and laying the foundation for her own jewellery range. Some five months later she launched MornieG, her midpriced collection of hand-made exclusive jewellery pieces. Mo and her husband Andrew moved from Somerset in 1979 when he took up a new position in personnel with the fire brigade. She left behind her career as an Accidental Jeweller The When Wiltshire-based furniture designer Mo Goodfield couldn’t find the jewellery she was looking for, she decided to make her own – and her unique jewellery range was conceived architectural technician for a bank, began work as a kitchen designer and, almost 30 years later, is still working for Mark Wilkinson. ‘I wasn’t qualified,’ she says, ‘none of us were. We just got in there and did the job. But I’ve always loved design, and natural materials. Making jewellery with glass, semi-precious stones, pearls, Swarovski crystal and silver has the same appeal.’ That first piece, made for the Christmas party, threw Mo into a steep learning curve. ‘I had to take it apart and remake it and only finished it within a few days of when I needed it,’ she admits. It was through working on that piece that Mo discovered chain-maille, the weaving of silver links. ‘Many of my designs feature hand-woven sterling silver chainemaille,’ she explains. ‘Most of my necklaces are a unique design. There is no chance that someone wearing my jewellery will ever see anyone else in exactly the same piece. The piece you view on the website will be the actual piece you are purchasing.’ Still working as a full-time furniture designer, Mo has converted one room in her home into a workshop. Where possible she uses materials sourced from UK companies. ‘Often the stone or bead dictates the design. My designs are, in the main, strong, statement pieces constructed from high-quality materials,’ she explains. ‘They’re very labour intensive. The first piece I made after my own necklace took 12 hours. Now it takes me half that time. But I love it. I’ve enjoyed the experience of designing and making my own jewellery and it has given me a different way of expressing my creativity. ‘It’s thrilling to see somebody wearing something I’ve made,’ she adds. ‘I find that incredible. A lady I work with bought a relatively expensive piece and wears it three or four times a week.
