The ancient stones of Avebury and Stonehenge, for instance, or the stunning Savernake Forest and the Marlborough white horse at Granham Hill. These jewels in the Wiltshire landscape make Marlborough’s historic streets seem almost modern by comparison. You can buy them at the town’s delicatessens, grocers and award-winning butcher, and at the markets held on Wednesday and Saturday, a privilege granted by King John back in the 13 th century. Both the elegance of the wide High Street, and the narrow, evocative alleyways, make shopping in the town a happy experience. Currently taking centre stage on the green is the town’s magnificent 30foot high Christmas tree. ‘The town looks absolutely beautiful with the new Christmas lights,’ says Marlborough’s Mayor, Cllr Mrs Peggy Dow. ‘A week after we turned on the lights in November, we had another ceremony to turn on the Christmas tree lights, accompanied by carol singing and mince pies. We also announced the winner of the Citizen of the Year award, and children from the local schools held a carol competition. ‘The Christmas lights make it such a joy to drive into town,’ she adds. ‘With the little boutiques and alleyways, it’s a beautiful and unusual place to shop for Christmas.
