Voydan<strong>of</strong>f (1989) notes that while earlier research examined primarily men's unemployment, women's<br />

employment, and dual career couples, recent research has focused on the structural and psychological<br />

characteristics <strong>of</strong> work, and the relationship between JOB CHARACTERISTICS and JOB<br />

SATISFACTION. Nonwork/work research has also begun to investigate the relationship between job<br />

characteristics and stress and health. Structural aspects <strong>of</strong> the job, such as working hours, compressed<br />

work week schedules, and geographic mobility have been shown to affect family life. Weekend work is<br />

generally shown to be negatively related to quality <strong>of</strong> family life (Voydan<strong>of</strong>f, 1989), the compressed<br />

work week schedule is positively related to family satisfaction (Tippins & Stroh, 1991), and job-related<br />

geographic mobility has mixed results (Brett, Stroh, & Reilly, 1992a).<br />

Models to Study Nonwork/Work Issues<br />

Combined with earlier research on nonwork/work issues, Kanter's (1977) influential review encouraged<br />

researchers to begin to think <strong>of</strong> the nonwork/work environment as an interface and theorists began to<br />

develop models to help explain the relationship.<br />
