Lewin proposed three fundamental propositions about force fields and change, which subsequent<br />

research confirmed.<br />

(1) Adding or increasing driving forces arouses an increase in resisting forces, the current equilibrium<br />

does not change but is maintained under increased tension.<br />

(2) Reducing or removing resisting forces is preferable because it will allow movement without<br />

increasing tension.<br />

(3) GROUP NORMS are an important force.<br />

An individual with valued membership in a group will increase his/her RESISTANCE TO CHANGE to<br />

the degree that s/he must deviate from the group's norms. <strong>The</strong> group is critical in a change effort. If<br />

group norms can be changed, then this key source <strong>of</strong> individual resistance will be reduced.<br />
