J429, Grades 5, 5.2, 8; and 8.2; ASTM Standard A325, Types 1, 2, and 3; ASTM A490,<br />

ASTM A354, ASTM A449 (I&II), and some ASTM F468.<br />

Item An all-inclusive term used in place of any of the following: appurtenance, assembly,<br />

component, equipment, material, module, part, structure, subassembly, subsystem, system, or<br />

unit.<br />

An all-inclusive term used in place of any of the following: appurtenance, facility, sample,<br />

assembly, component, equipment, material, module, part, structure, subassembly, subsystem,<br />

system, unit, documented concept, or data.<br />

Substantial safety hazard. A loss of safety function to the extent that there is a major reduction in<br />

the degree of protection to the public or employee health and safety.<br />

Suspect/counterfeit items. A suspect item is one in which there is an indication by visual<br />

inspection, testing, or other information that it may not conform to established Government or<br />

industry-accepted specifications or national consensus standards. A counterfeit item is a suspect<br />

item that is a copy or substitute without legal right or authority to do so or one whose material,<br />

performance, or characteristics are knowingly misrepresented by the vendor, supplier, distributor,<br />

or manufacturer. An item that does not conform to established requirements is not normally<br />

considered S/CI if the nonconformity results from one or more of the following conditions, which<br />

should be controlled by site procedures as nonconforming items:<br />

Defects resulting from inadequate design or production quality control<br />

Damage during shipping, handling, or storage<br />

Improper installation<br />

Deterioration during service<br />

Degradation during removal<br />

Failure resulting from aging or misapplication, or<br />

Other controllable causes.<br />
