Translator's note Apart from the general difficulty of doing justice to the wide range of stylistic registers exploited by Siegfried Kracauer, the translator of Die Angestellten is confronted by one immediate problem to which there is no wholly satisfactory solution: namely, the title and subject of the work. The problem arises because specific German social legislation has given far sharper definition to categories that in English remain approximate and essentially descriptive. For this rea�on I have felt compelled to adopt the admittedly rather ponderous and foreignsounding salaried employee/employee/salariat group of renderings. I should have done so, moreover, even were such alternatives as whitecollar worker (a 'common but absolutely meaningless term': Harry Braverman), clerk, clerical worker or office worker not ruled out by other considerations - as being too gender-specific, too dated, too restrictive, etc. I have usually followed the conventional practice of retaillill� thl" original names of trade union journals, but append below their EII�lish versions. It remains only to thank those who have provided invaluable hel p ill the preparation of this translation. Nick Jacobs and John Willett werl" unstinting with their time and knowledge in tracking down cultural allusions.
