Research collaboration CWTRI - TU Delft In 2007 a collaboration was started between the University of the Netherlands Antilles, the Caribbean Water Technology Research Institute, the Association of Dutch Water Companies, the Suriname Water Company and Delft University of Technology. The collaborative operative agreement promotes far-reaching cooperation in higher education and research concerning the provision of drinking water supplies. The group’s common goal is to set up a high-quality knowledge infrastructure in water-system management for the Dutch Antilles, Aruba and Suriname. From August 2008 the Anton de Kom University of Suriname also participates in this unique collaboration. In 2008 several research projects were initiated, like seawater desalination with wind energy, consequences for water utilities of the transition of the BES islands to the Netherlands, on-line temperature measurements in the distribution system and home installations. Furthermore, first lectures on drinking water treatment were given at the University of the Netherlands Antilles. Over 60 students and employees of the water companies participated in the lecture series. The collaboration has been evaluated as very successful and will be continued in the coming years. In 2009 several new research projects will start, like the calculation of the Infrastructure Leakage Index (ILI) for all of the island of the Netherlands Antilles, the control of biofouling in reverse osmosis installation and desalination by a combination of photo voltaic cells and reverse osmosis. Research collaboration ITB Bandung - TU Delft On the 21st of July 2008 Rusnandi Garsadi obtained his doctorate at the ITB in Bandung, Indonesia. During his PhD research Rusnandi Garsadi worked on the design of a new type of coagulation/flocculation unit. This unit will predominantly used on mobile drinking water treatment installations for emergency drinking water supply. The design of the unit is improved by the use of CFD models. The CFD models were calibrated with measurements in a laboratory set-up of the University of Technology Delft. The research on the improvement of coagulation processes was initiated by cooperation between ITB and Vitens Evides International. In a follow-up study a continuous beaker apparatus will be developed. In a standard beaker apparatus a coagulation/flocculation/ sedimentation batch experiment will be executed. The new apparatus will be able to execute an experiment like this on a continuous basis which makes it possible to accelerate the optimization. Here the CFD modeling will platy an important role. Rusnandi Garsadi will join the drinking water research group in Delft for one year to work on the development of this apparatus.
