Blue & Gold, Issue 8 - the International School of Belgrade

Throughout the year, the Journalism class has faithfully been bringing
you ISB’s first ever student newspaper, the Blue & Gold. This final issue
is a collection of students’ final projects, where each created and designed
an entire page centered around a theme. Unfortunately, because
of limited space, we’ve only printed a few students’ work. However, a
big round of applause goes to all the creative geniuses in the Journalism
class (shown below).

Lenore the Cute Little Dead Girl

Lenore, the cute
little dead girl, is not
your average reanimated
corpse. She doesn’t go
around eating the flesh of
humans or striking fear
into all un/living things.
All she cares about is her
friends and having fun,
even if she is unaware that
the fun she has leads to
the death of many people,
creatures, and well…everything.
Lenore was created by Roman
Dirge who based her character on
Edgar Allen Poe’s poem, Lenore.
Dirge has the same dark humor as
his good friends Jhonen Vasquez
(Johnny the Homicidal Maniac,
Invader Zim) and Tim Burton (The
Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy,
The Nightmare Before Christmas)
which he utilizes to the max. Each
issue of Lenore is filled
with stories of Lenore
and her friends, nursery
rhymes with a dark twist,
short stories of one shot
characters (such as
Samurai Sloth), and
Stuff Involving Me. The
latter is one of the most
entertaining aspects of
the comic where Dirge
recalls a story from his
past that is somewhat
random but totally hilarious.
All in all Lenore is one of
the most creative and entertaining
comics out there these days, and if
you are a fan of Vasquez or Burton,
then you will fall in love with Lenore.

Besides numerous, breathtaking
beaches, this magnificent
island offers many great diving
spots, where species of flora and
fauna form interesting sights for
scuba divers.
In order to go scuba diving
in the sea, you must be over ten
years old, and also must be certified
as a “junior” diver.
Festival Honors Admiral
Miaoulis
Hydra has a variety of local
customs and festivals, but one
of the most important ones is on
June 21, in the honor of Admiral
Miaoulis, who is an important figure
from the Greek Revolution in
1821.
This festival lasts for three
days and is a part of “Navy Week”.
The festival invloves folk dancing
and sports, thus it closes with a
fireworks display, meant to represent
the burning of the Turkish
flagship.

Terrorism is a policy or ideology of
violence[1] intended to intimidate
or cause terror[2] for the purpose
of “exerting pressure on decision
making by state bodies.”[1] The
term “terror” is largely used to
indicate clandestine, low-intensity
violence that targets civilians and
generates public fear. Thus “terror”
is distinct from asymmetric
warfare, and violates the concept
of a common law of war in which
civilian life is regarded.

She is big. She is black. She is in charge. No,
she’s not Oprah Winfrey. She is Macy Gray. Macy
Gray is one of the most legendary soul/funk artists
of our times. She has one of the most distinct hoarse
voices, which she claims as being inspired by vintage
musicians like Betty Davis and Billie Holiday. Her
masterpieces include “I Try” (which got her half a
dozen nominations and two wins),
“Sexual Revolution”, “Relating to a
Psychopath” and “Do Something”
(her very first single which rocked the
music industry). Not only does she
create phenomenal music, but she
also is an active humanitarian, who
supports unfortunate families and
donates to non-profit organizations.
On May 24, Belgrade was
granted the enormous privilege of
hosting Macy Gray’s long anticipated
concert at the Beogradska Arena.
My mom, sister, and I attended the
eagerly awaited show. Macy Gray is
undoubtedly the star of the show,
but it wouldn’t have been as aweinspiring
without the contribution
of her bandmates’ performance.
Towards the end of the concert, they
played “Oblivion” and, much to our entertainment,
the drastic and funky beats were matched with the
alternating jumps of the bassist and guitar player.
This tour’s band includes: Joshua Lopez, the gymnastguitarist;
Aaron Ficca, the smashing drummer; Jeremy
Ruzumna, aka master of the keyboard; Keith, the tall
dark and handsome bassist; Maya & Mika, the booty
shaking duo with Aretha voices; and Marina, the

How do I know so much abotu these band
members? As I have indicated in my previous Back to
the Future articles, I am a groupie lost in time. Mother
dearest, an old groupie herself, saw me bawling and
overwhelmed and commenced
the (not so) top secret mission:
LOCATE MACY AND COMPANY
(LMC). So, a woman led us to a
man, who led us to another man,
who led us to a security guard,
who led us out the door, which
led us sneaking back, which lead
us to a room underneath the
arena. The first couple of minutes
were a blur due to your failureof-a-journalist
being completely
star-struck. However, once I
regained consciousness, I spent
almost an hour chatting with the
band. Unfortunately, Macy was
exhausted and only spent a few
minutes with us, (just enough
time for a photo op), but the rest
of the crew were more than we
had hoped for. All of them were
equally charming, talented, and normal. Thanks to the
miracle of Facebook, (note to Mr. Kralovec: Facebook
is GOOD. Unblock it. Thanks in advance), we are still in
contact with them. You may relate me to a psychopath
for stalking them down, but it is well worth it.

from the Roots, Common, George

Travel
Milan: The Heart and Soul of Made in Italy
For anyone craving
new clothes, good food, and
an exciting weekend, Milan
is the place to go. For the
incredibly ignorant, Milan is
located in Italy, and is the
fashion capital of the world.
In the center, you can find
all the shops that give Italy
its reputation for fashion.
The most famous street in
Milan, Via della Spiga, is a
small cobblestone street
parallel to a much bigger
Via Monte Napoleone. In
these two streets, the avid
shoppers can find brands
such as Gucci, Prada, Juicy
Couture, Louis Vuitton,
Tiffany’s, Dolce & Gabbana,
Ralph Lauren, Balenciaga,
Versace, and much, much more. Close to these
shops is a high end mall, La Rinascente, which is a
condensed version of all the brands, plus perfumes,
home & deco, and a hair dresser. On the top floor,
there are several restaurants, three of which are on
the balcony, with an up-close view of the intricate
architecture of the massive Duomo. However, if you

Summer is approaching, and if you still don’t
have any plans, surprisingly enough, you may want to
consider going to a summer school. Milan is famous
for two things: fashion, and AC Milan soccer team, and
this city can provide you with the perfect opportunity
to educate you in either. If you’re an aspiring designer,
and you’re over 18, spending three weeks in Milan
at the Uptodate Fashion academy might just be
the thing for you. Located in the heart of Milan, the
academy offers courses in being a personal shopper,
fashion make-up, fashion photography, and working
in the fashion business. The courses last three weeks
and classes are daily from Monday to Thursday. You

If fashion is not your calling, and you prefer
sports, the famous Milanese soccer club ACMilan,
offers several camps all over the world, including
Milan. The camps start every Monday and can last
one or two weeks. Mostly located in the outskirts of
Milan, these soccer camps truly offer a incredible way
to advance in soccer and sportsmanship.
If you only want to go to Milan for a few days
and have no interest whatsoever in learning anything,
there are many concerts going on this summer. Of
course, for the more cultural experience, there are the
usual performances in the famous Teatro alla Scalla.
However, this summer, Milan is packed with touring
performers. Starting on June 18 with Depeche Mode,
people in Milan will have the opportunity to see
get tired of the loud
center streets, take a
cab and go to Corso
Como, a small quiet
walking street which
contains the famous
shop, 10 Corso Como,
a concept store with
a gallery, bookshop,
restaurant, and a
collection of today’s
most wanted brands
such as Manolo
Blahnik, Andy Warhol,
and Lanvin. It is sure
that you will enjoy
yourself there as the
place is run by the
sister of the editor of
Vogue. Nevertheless,
Milan is not necessarily always
about designer shoes and expensive clothes. If you
want to buy more for less, head to Corso Buenos Aires,
a huge boulevard with stores such as H&M, Oviesse,
Zara, Nike, Foot Locker, Promod, and Adidas. All in
all, Milan is the right place for anyone who needs to
refresh or majorly overhaul their wardrobe.

Summer in Milan: Learning is Fun!
Fireworks on the night of Ferragosto
Metallica, Katy Perry, Korn, Nine Inch Nails, Pink Floyd,
U2, Madonna, Oasis, The Kooks, Enrique Iglesias, and
many more through the summer season. Also, if you
happen to be in Milan around August 15, you will most
likely be witnessing the Ferragosto celebrations. Even
though many shops are closed during this time, there
are many concerts and festivities going on.
Whether your interests are fashion, soccer, or
music, Milan is the heart of good times and the place
to be this summer.

Imperial Forum is a collection of public squares,
hat were constructed by Augustus, Caesar, Trajan,
erva and Vespasian sometime 42 BC and AD 112.
These forums were
used as the centres
of commercial, political,
religious life and
public events. When
Christianity began
spreading, numerous
churches were built.
Most famous forums
is the Roman Forum,
a large archeological
ite that consists of buildings built in the Ancient Roan
times. Among these constructions of the Roman
orums are Temple of Saturn, The Regia, Temple of

of the largest amphitheatre
of the Roman
Empire built in the 70-

St. Peter’s Basilic is the most famous church in
ome. Even though it has been there since 4th century,
he construction of present Basilica began in the 16th
entury, and finished in 1626. Famous Italian artists,
rchitects and sculptors like Rafael, Bernini, and Mihelangelo
were working on the Basilica during it’s cons
t r u c t i o n .

*Trevi Fountain- This fountain was built in baroque
style, by Nicola Selvi in 18th century, and finished by
Guiseppe Panini. The main character on the Fountain
is Oceanus, sitting on the sea shell guided by seahorses
and tritons. This sculpture of him is surrounded
by other allegoric figures, and above are bas-relives;
one of them
is represented
by a woman
that shows
the direction
to springs,
which are located
17km
from Rome.
The best time
to see and
enjoy this is
at night when
there is perfect lightening and few people around,
because during the day it’s crowded and it’s almost
impossible to take photos. The fountain is filled up
with coins as to the famous tradition if you throw a
coin with your right hand over your left shoulder, you
will definitely come to Rome again.

make it at home
*Tutti Frutti *
-1 Egg
-1 c. scalded milk
-1/2 c. sugar
-1 small can crushed pineapple
-1/2 c. maraschino cherries
-1 large banana
-2 T. lemon juice
-1/4 tsp salt
-1 c. cream
Pour scalded milk over beaten egg, whip cream and
sugar, pour lemon juice over mashed banana, add
finely cut cherries, pineapple and salt. Combine all
mixtures and freeze in the refrigerator.

8 Entertainment
Atlantis: a myth
or a true empire?
Have you ever wondered
where the story of the legendary
lost island Atlantis came from?
How come so many of us still
search the answer to this mystery
after thousands of years?
Somehow, people can’t let
go of Atlantis, perhaps deep inside
they believe it really existed, and,
indeed, wouldn’t it be amazing to
know that somewhere deep in the
vast ocean rests a long-lost empire?
But let’s go back to the very
beginning, to the times of the one
who started this whole story, not
realizing that it would later become
such a great legend. Plato, also
known as Aristocles, described
Atlantis as an Utopian society that
valued peace, art and wisdom,
enjoyed riches beyond that of
any subsequent civilization and
possessed advanced technological
knowledge for the time. The land,
Plato stated, was very productive
with abundant animals, food,
water and nature resources.
Atlantis conquered parts of Europe
and North Africa; the empire was
almost invincible. Soon, however,
the leaders of this society became
greedy and corrupt. Just shortly
after these victories, violent,
devastating earthquakes and the
resulting floods destroyed the
entire island of Atlantis, submerging
it beneath the sea forever.
The main question that
torments scientists today is whether
Plato simply wrote a moralistic story
or if he described a true historical
event? Many scientists believe this
legend truly is just a legend and
Plato’s story is actually showing
how a perfect society can become
corrupted and later be punished.
On the other hand, others believe
that the ruins of the island are still
hidden in the depths of the Atlantic
Ocean. Some search teams have
been sent to locate the island, but
unfortunately there haven’t been
any discoveries that would prove
the existence of the legendary
island. It seems, therefore, that
the story is just a myth after all,
but that doesn’t mean we can’t
still be dreaming and hoping that
a perfect island once existed.

Disney makes its
animated version
Based on the legend of
Atlantis, Walt Disney made its
40th animated classic “Atlantis:
The Lost Empire”, which was
published in 2001. The movie
tells a story of an aspiring, young
explorer Milo James Thatch and his
companions as they head off on a
long and hazardous journey with
the purpose of finding the secret
location of Atlantis. They soon
learn that the city is protected by
the Heart of Atlantis, so the new
task becomes guarding the Heart
from the team commander Lyle
Rourke. Rourke’s intention is to
make fortune using the Heart, but
unbeknownst to him, without it the
city and its residents will die. This
is yet another fantastic story about
adventure, love with lots of dynamic
action, a great plot, characters and
soundtrack. Just like other Disney
movies, it will make you stay
in your seats until the very end.
