An extended conversation that examines the<br />

relationship among life, love, and food.<br />

John Merrick in The Elephant Man<br />

Elephant Man, The (1980) Drama ΨΨΨ<br />

David Lynch film about the life of John Merrick,<br />

a hideously deformed man who is befriended by<br />

a London physician. The film is effective in forcing<br />

the viewer to examine his or her prejudices<br />

about appearance.<br />

Eye, The (2002) Suspense/Thriller ΨΨΨ<br />

A young, blind woman regains her sight through a<br />

cornea transplant. She immediately begins to see<br />

ghosts which she identifies as the souls of the dead.<br />

Pang Brothers film in the tradition of The Sixth<br />

Sense and The Ring.<br />

Falling Down (1994) Drama ΨΨΨ<br />

Good presentation by Michael Douglas of the<br />

cumulative effects of stress on a marginal personality.<br />

The film does not give us enough information to<br />

clearly diagnose the character played by Douglas,<br />

but he displays enough symptoms to justify an Axis<br />

II diagnosis of paranoid personality disorder.<br />

Gabby—A True Story (1987) Biography ΨΨΨ<br />

A true story about a woman with cerebral palsy<br />

who goes on to become a respected author.<br />

Contrast this story with the life of Christy Brown<br />

told in My Left Foot.<br />

Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) Drama ΨΨΨ<br />

A hard-hitting and powerful presentation of jobrelated<br />

stress and interpersonal conflict in the real<br />

estate business. Wonderful cast, with Jack Lemmon<br />

playing a figure whose despair with his job is reminiscent<br />

of Willy Lomax in Arthur Miller’s Death of<br />

a Salesman.<br />

Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, The (1968) Drama ΨΨ<br />

Alan Arkin stars in this adaptation of Carson<br />

McCuller’s sad, poignant novel about a simple<br />

friendship between two men. One of the men is deaf;<br />

the other is mentally retarded. If you have to choose<br />

between the film and the novel, read the novel.<br />

Honkytonk Man (1982) Drama Ψ<br />

Clint Eastwood produced, directed, and starred in<br />

this film about a country and western singer with<br />

leukemia who hopes to make it to Nashville before<br />

he dies.<br />

Hunchback of Notre Dame, The (1939)<br />

Horror ΨΨΨΨΨ<br />

Charles Laughton plays Quasimodo in this film<br />

adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel. The film is a<br />

classic in the genre examining the relationship<br />

between body image and self-concept.<br />

I Sent a Letter to My Love (1981) Drama ΨΨΨ<br />

French film about a sister caring for her paralyzed<br />

brother. They each seek romance by writing to a<br />

newspaper personals column; without realizing<br />

what is happening, each winds up corresponding<br />

with the other.<br />

Ikiru (1952) Drama ΨΨΨΨ<br />

Existential Akira Kurosawa film about a man<br />

dying from cancer who finds meaning in the last<br />

days of his life by helping a group of mothers build<br />

a playground for their children.<br />

In America (2003) Drama ΨΨΨΨ<br />

Irish family immigrates to the United States to<br />

Hell’s Kitchen. They befriend a Nigerian painter<br />

who is suffering with AIDS.<br />

In for Treatment (1979) Drama ΨΨΨ<br />

Dutch film about the indignities suffered by a cancer<br />

patient who has to deal with an impersonal<br />

health care system.<br />

Italian for Beginners (2002) Comedy/Drama ΨΨΨ<br />

In a hodge-podge of interrelated stories, one character<br />

has pancreatic cancer and suffers extraordinary pain.<br />

It’s My Party (1996) Drama ΨΨΨΨ<br />

Sensitive film about a man with AIDS who throws<br />

one last party before killing himself. Much of the<br />
