Almost half of visitors to Brazil disembark in Sao
Paulo this equated to 2 ½ million visitors in 2005,
the majority of which arrived from Europe. In 2005,
the state had 2,073 tourism agencies, 831 tourists’
transportation companies and 137 organizers of
tourism events, according the Brazil Tourism Board.
Due to the sheer size of Sao Paulo it contains a wide
and varied range of different activities and contrasts
between the old and the new. There are plenty of
cultural and artistic attractions and many greens
areas within the city.
The East coast side boasts one of the most beautiful
coastlines in Brazil. The region has 180 beaches,
317 waterfalls, 11 hiking trails, and 138 thousands
hectares of Atlantic forest where people can surf,
dive, sail, fish, and participate in other adventure
and leisure sports.
In the South of the state lies the Vale do Ribeira
(Ribeira River Valley), this is the largest continuous
stretch of Atlantic rainforest and is one of the most
biologically diverse areas of Brazil. It is home to
more than 400 species of mammals, birds, reptiles
and amphibians. It is a Mecca for eco-tourists and
extreme sportsman, due to its varied range of
geographical features including caves and grottos.
There are over 454 caves in the region.
