The Legend of Flying Cyprian

Slovakian director Mariana Cengel-Solcanska’s
first feature-length motion picture, The
Legend of Flying Cyprian has been hailed
as a visually impressive masterpiece with a
glorious soundtrack.
According to legend, in 18th century Europe,
a man arrived very badly injured at
the door of The Red Monastery, a Camaldolese
monastery in the mountains. The
monks, who live in total isolation, oblivious
to the outside world, take him in, name him
Cyprian, nursed him back to health, and
discovered his profound skill at thousands
of crafts and thousands of sciences. It is
there that he built a flying machine adapted
from Leonardo Da Vinci’s design and embarked
on its maiden voyage to pay a visit
to God himself.
Mariana Cengel-Solcanska was born
in Nitra in 1978. While studying Film at
the Academy of Music and Dramatic
Arts in Bratisla she directed several
short student films and a made-for-TV
movie produced in the Czech Republic.

Jordin attends a school in East L.A. but he
sees no point in it. He is cocky and charming;
he insults his teacher who suspends
him.
In this coming of age story, the five days
that Jordin is banished from class, we see
the boy become a man. Jordin is not close
to his cold and cranky father, but he is tender
and loving with his aged grandfather
who still fancies himself a bon vivant. He
meets Felipa, a bookish girl and misfit who
sees past Jordin’s macho swagger, and a
tenuous friendship begins. Along the way
some family secrets are revealed not only
about Jordin, but about Felipa as well.
The director’s cast mixes old pros like Pedro
Armendariz as the beloved grandfather and
proficient young newcomers such as Veronica
Diaz-Carranza as Felipa who sparkles
and is both sassy and soft in her portrayal.
Veronica will attend the screening and will
receive SRIFF’s “Rising Star Award”.

A recent UCLA study determined that 93%
of human communication is nonverbal.
Director Janez Burger takes this premise a
step further with Silent Sonata, a poignant
film that contains no dialogue whatsoever
(which you will not miss).
“When we think of how humanity has lived
for the past few thousand years, we don’t get
the impression that it lived in peace which
was occasionally broken by wars,” Burger
observes. “On the contrary, humans have
lived in war with occasional cease fires.”
The story is about a father and his children
who live in a dilapidated house in the
middle of a barren warzone. As they await
the enemy’s next volley, they are paid a visit
by Circus Fantasticus, a wandering caravan
complete with acrobats, a fire-eater, a
hobo clown skilled at both accordion and
sleight-of-hand magic tricks, and a dying
Ringmaster.
In this visual stunner, the forces of
good overcome those of evil. It is a
film of feelings, atmosphere, sensibility,
and surrealism. With Special Guests.
