SALLY KIRKLAND, In Person.
Yurek Bogayevicz’s classic film Anna is
based on the true story of Polish actress
Elezabieta Czyewska, who was blacklisted
in Poland on account of her erstwhile
husband David Halberstam’s criticism of
Poland’s communist regime. Sally Kirkland,
a SRIFF guest of honor, was nominated
Best Actress for her stunning performance
as Anna, an aging and exiled Czech actress
trying to hit the big time in New York City
and struggling after her divorce from a wellconnected
intellectual.
During a humiliating audition, she makes
the acquaintanceship of Krystyna, a beautiful
off-the-boat young actress from Czechoslovakia
who idolizes her. Anna takes
the young girl under her wing, helps her
learn to speak English and introduces her
to several well-connected friends. Sadly,
As Krystyna’s career ignites and takes off,
Anna continues to tread a hard road.
The film makes astute commentary about
the motion picture industry—particularly to
the effect that in show business, beauty is often
held to a higher value than actual talent.

campaign to save them, the last of the untouched
coastlines of the peninsula.
Through the unlikely alliance of WILD-
COAST activists, fishermen, and surfers
came the immense effort to preserve the
beauty of Baja against some of the most
powerful developers in Mexico and eventual
victory.

In this modern day coming of age story,
Evan (Avram Walden), is a Computer Science

World Cinema
40 is the story of a city and how it influences
the lives of three strangers as their worlds
weave, waltz and collide on its chaotic
streets. Shot entirely on location in Istanbul,
40 combines intense dramatic story telling
with documentary-style cinematography...a
synchronistic journey dealing with faith,
love, luck, destiny, human trafficking…and
a bag full of money that falls from the sky.
Metin is a young man who, having fled a
harrowing home life to strike it rich in the
big city, has jumped from the frying pan
into the fire, using his job as a taxi driver
as a front so that he can deliver drugs to
wealthy citizens of Istanbul.
Godwill is a naïve but resourceful illegal immigrant
from Nigeria, who dreams of going
to Paris to be in the arms of his One True
Love. Sevda, an Istanbullite nurse born to
bi-cultural parents, is spiritually conflicted,
having tried her hand at Buddhism, Christianity
and Islam, she is now using numerology
to find the way to a better life for herself
and her young daughter. Action is set
during a turbulent week when each of the
three characters finds and loses the treasured
bag of bills. Amid themes of urban
dislocation and dispossession, 40 questions
the notion of fate and destiny. Do things
happen for a reason or are they random?
40 and Currency share a common spirit in
our Festival this year, and without a doubt
should be seen as a pair.
