2012 FFA National Futsal Championships
BOOMERANGS FS SHOW LOCAL CLASS
Whilst the FFA Futsal National Championships provides the pinnacle
for state representation there is a flourishing local club scene in the
ACT as well. Season 2011/12 saw the second year of the local Futsal
Premier League competitions and the implementation of the Junior
Futsal Premier League as the impact of the indoor sport continued
to group. Perhaps the best example of how the sport in the ACT has
developed over the years has been the Boomerangs FS club.
Boomerangs FS, who currently field squads in the NSW Premier
League, was the initiative of two passionate local Canberra Futsal
people, Kristian Collins and Eddie Senatore. The idea behind the club
was to offer players, aged 9 to open, from the ACT the opportunity to
play in what is widely regarded as the best Futsal League in Australia
in New South Wales. The hope being that players exposed to that
level of competition will be better equipped to handle the National Championships.
The Boomerangs started life in the NSW Super League only two years ago with their rapid ascension to the
top level a glowing endorsement of the brand underpinned by Senatore and Collins. Collins explained that
promotion came somewhat early for the club. “The plan was originally to aim for promotion in our fourth season
after what would have been three years of development and training,” Collins admitted. “However midway
through the 2009/10 season it became apparent that promotion was a viable outcome. The team continued to
play some fantastic Futsal and the results came our way and promotion was secured. We believe that the NSW
Premier League is the most competitive league in Australia and for our club to be in that type of environment in
just our third year is a fantastic achievement for our players, parents and coaching staff.”
The promotion has certainly paid dividends for the Boomerangs in terms of recruiting new players which in turn
has made the standard of Futsal in the ACT improve. According to Collins further exposure to this level can
only benefit the game in the region in the future. “The NSW Premier League is like playing in the Futsal Nationals
on weekly basis,” Collins commented. “Being exposed to the
best players in the country can only benefit our playing stocks
in the ACT. But this initiative also benefits our coaches and
referees who are also exposed to the best in their respective
fields. The Boomerangs main goal is the development of
players and this can only be seen as a benefit for the ACT
representative teams in turn. Each week you can see the
players developing, learning new things and that’s great not
only for the players involved but also for the players who our
players play with and against locally who will learn from the
Boomerangs players’ experiences.”
Such has been the success of the Boomerangs throughout the season that amazingly ninety-five players from
the club will kit up for the ACT in the FFA Futsal National Championships with plenty of outstanding players on
show across all the age groups (see sidebar). As such you could possibly forgive the Boomerangs administration
for resting on their laurels. Not a bit of it however. In the pipeline for the future are possible overseas tours,
development academies and even national status in an Australian wide competition. And while this may seem
to be a tough task to achieve few would bet against the resourceful Boomerangs to succeed.
“Every single person that has been involved with the club so far deserves some recognition for where we are right
now,” Collins said. “It has been a pleasure watching the younger players develop and the parents get excited
over the last three seasons. Hopefully that doesn’t end here and we can push on and keep the upward trend
that we have seen so far.”
