2012 FFA National Futsal Championships
2011 - A Retrospective
The 2011 FFA Futsal national Champions ended with quite some finale
as NSW Thunder defeated Victoria in a dramatic penalty shoot-out to
claim the Men’s Open crown after an epic struggle. The scintillating final
that had the almost capacity crowd on the edge of its seats throughout
was a fitting way to culminate a weeklong event that, once again,
showed the best that Futsal can offer to an appreciative public.
A penalty miss from Victorian Ahmed Azzam ultimately proved the
difference in the Open Men’s Final. Azzam saw his penalty pushed onto
the post by Thunder goalkeeper Gavin O’Brien as the Sky Blues erupted.
Earlier in the match Simon Keith had slotted in off the post in the 19th
minute to give Thunder the lead only for Victoria to hit back and equalise with three minutes remaining after
Fernando De Moraes fed an exquisite pass to Ernie Simsek to slot home. And it seemed as though Victoria would
claim the glory when De Moraes scored with two minutes to play only for Shervin Adeli to clip in a sensational last
minute leveller to send the game to spot-kicks and the Thunder to ultimate triumph. Adam Husseni of Tasmania
was selected as the Open Men’s tournament MVP for a series of excellent displays for his state. Meanwhile, a
thumping strike from Renee Tomkins sealed the Open Women’s title for the NSW Thunder as the Sky Blues continued
to rack up the titles on Grand Final day eventually ending with twelve of the seventeen crowns available. Tomkins
smashed in the winner from distance to settle a staid tie that was lacking in inspiration but was a tactical battle to
the extreme. The Cobras went close to an equaliser but the Thunder deserved their narrow win with Natasha Lo
Guidice in outstanding form. Lauren Diduszko of Western NSW was named MVP of the Open Women’s competition.
It was Thunder all the way in the Youth competitions as the powerhouse state claimed victory in both Youth
Men and Youth Women at the expense of the locals from the ACT. NSW Thunder claimed the 2011 Youth Men
championships by capitalising on a couple of mistakes by the home town Cobras. Twice the Cobras turned over
cheap possession inside their own half and Jarrod Basger was on hand to slide home two excellent finishes to put
his team in full control. Timothy Denne pulled one back for the Cobras with a shot that Thunder goalkeeper Alastair
Bruce should have done better with, but the Thunder were deserving winners on the day. ACT Cobras player Ryan
Keir was named tournament MVP with team mate Glenn Smith claiming the Golden Boot award. It was a similar
tale in the Youth Women where a sublime goal by Doris Osman gave the NSW Thunder the platform to take home
the final with a 2-0 win over the ACT Cobras. Osman was on the end of a slick move to fire home from close range
and give the Thunder the priceless advantage in the first half. A second goal, after the break from Helen Petinos,
slamming a left foot effort high into the net completed the Thunder win with the ACT going close on a couple of
occasions with Catherine Brown hitting the woodwork. Elise O’Kelly of NSW Lightning was named tournament MVP
with the Thunder’s Doris Osman, a goal poacher of some repute, the leading goal scorer.
As has been the norm for the majority of the FFA Futsal national Championships, it was the NSW Thunder who
dominated proceedings in the Junior sections. However there were some instances where not everything went
the way of the usual tournament favourites. The NSW Lightning provided an upset with a 2-0 win over the Thunder
in the Boy’s under-16 competition with goals from Luke Clifford and Nathan Clissold to end a competitive event.
The Lightning looked in excellent form for the match and played some wonderful futsal keeping possession and
pouncing at the right times to deny their stable mates. In something of a consolation to the beaten team Daniel
Vellonio of NSW Thunder completed a memorable week by winning the tournament MVP. And, as if to prove that
the boy’s effort was no fluke, earlier in the day NSW Lightning
broke the NSW Thunder monopoly with a fine 2-0 win in the
Girls under-16 competition. In one of the fiercest matches of
the week nothing could separate the teams at the interval
after a goalless first period. That’s not to say there weren’t
chances, but both goalkeepers were determined to keep a
clean sheet. It took something special to break the deadlock
when Katherine Hawker lashed in a long-range drive that flew
into the top corner for the opener. The next goal was always
likely to be crucial and it was the Lightning who got it when
Montana Bolzan struck. Lightning’s Patricia Charalamboas
was named player of the match while Western NSW player
Chloe Robinson was elected as the tournament MVP for 2011.
