JEMM
OZMATH Press 2010
Junior Elementary Math Mastery is a highly innovative mental math
program specifically designed to embrace the Australian National
Mathematics Curriculum Profile. Purpose-built to maximise every benefit
a mental math program is capable of yielding, JEMM is ideally suited for
middle primary students and upper primary remedial students. Requiring
only 10 to 15 minutes daily to implement, plus 3 to 7 minutes for instant
feedback, JEMM contains its own inbuilt assessment and correction
procedures.
JEMM serves as a powerful diagnostic tool, clearly mapping students’
progress, identifying precisely where and when they are experiencing
difficulty. With diligent implementation the program’s unambiguous
instructional technique guarantees students will quickly become fluent
and automatic in fundamental math skills.
About Direct Instruction
Research indicates that direct instruction has the fourth greatest effect on student achievement,
preceded only by feedback, students’ prior cognitive ability and teacher instructional quality.
Direct teaching … is associated with several different descriptors; for example, explicit instruction, systematic
instruction, direct instruction, active teaching and teacher-directed approach.
All these forms of direct teaching share a set of basic principles including the setting of clear objectives for
learning, systematic instruction that progresses from simple to more complex concepts and skills, ongoing
monitoring of students’ progress, frequent questioning and answering, reteaching of content when necessary, and
practice, application and assessment.
Direct teaching is based on a firm belief that learning can be optimised if teachers’ presentations (and the steps in
learning) are so clear that they eliminate all likely misinterpretations and facilitate generalisation.
