Quick Guide to Special Needs Assessment Tools
What is a specific learning disability?
According to Mapping the Territory, the Commonwealth government
enquiry in Australian schools by Louden et al., 2000, there is much
discussion and confusion around the terminology and definition of
learning disabilities. For many Australian teachers the term may include a
disparate group of students such as those who have physical disabilities,
emotional difficulties, intellectual disabilities, or who speak English as a
second language as well as the students who have specific literacy skill
difficulties despite their average to high ability in other areas. Additionally
terms such as ‘students at risk’, ‘specific learning difficulties’ and ‘learning
disabilities’ are used interchangeably to describe various groups of
students (Louden et al., 2000).
6
A widely accepted definition refers to those students who have average
or above general ability, but difficulty with reading, spelling or mathematics,
and associated processing. Diagnosis that is formally accepted for specific
learning disability (e.g. for special consideration for Year 12 examinations)
includes intelligence and processing abilities testing (e.g. Stanford-Binet,
WISC), and normed reading, spelling and mathematics testing for a gap of
two or more years behind expected chronological age level (e.g. Neale
Analysis of Reading Ability, PAT-R).
Below is a selection of tests that can be used by teachers as an indicator
of the need for such referral for formal testing and as a way to establish
and take into account the cognitive processing and other needs of
students.
Specimen Sets
Most assessments offer a Specimen Set, which allows you to fully
evaluate and compare testing programs before making your purchase.
A Specimen Set usually contains an administration manual and a
sample of each of the test components. In most cases, multiple copies
of test booklets and answer sheets will need to be purchased. All
tests can be administered individually, but group use is highlighted.
What is OMR?
OMR stands for Optical Mark Recognition and indicates that test
or survey response sheets can be scanned and computer scored.
Where OMR Answer Sheets are available with an ACER assessment,
completed Answer Sheets can be sent to ACER Test Scoring
Assessments – Classroom
Linking Assessment to Teaching and Learning
Two principal objectives of assessment are
…to enable a teacher to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching program and then to make any
necessary modifications to method of delivery, learning activities or resources [and] to identify any
students who are having difficulties mastering the course content, and thus need additional help.
A good starting point is to conduct a School Assessment Audit to
identify the different assessments being used at different year levels and
in different subjects. It is useful to record who is responsible for each
assessment, how often it is conducted and its purpose.
16
further diagnostic testing
Once a decision has been made about which assessment to employ, it is
useful to plan how the results will be used. Here is an example of how
About Direct Instruction
Research indicates that direct instruction has the fourth greatest effect on student achievement,
preceded only by feedback, students’ prior cognitive ability and teacher instructional quality.
Direct teaching … is associated with several different descriptors; for example, explicit instruction, systematic
instruction, direct instruction, active teaching and teacher-directed approach.
All these forms of direct teaching share a set of basic principles including the setting of clear objectives for
learning, systematic instruction that progresses from simple to more complex concepts and skills, ongoing
monitoring of students’ progress, frequent questioning and answering, reteaching of content when necessary, and
practice, application and assessment.
Direct teaching is based on a firm belief that learning can be optimised if teachers’ presentations (and the steps in
learning) are so clear that they eliminate all likely misinterpretations and facilitate generalisation.
Visualizing and Verbalizing
Nanci Bell
Gander Publishing 2007
Visualizing and Verbalizing shows how oral and written comprehension
can be developed through the use of visual imagery – a vital factor in
thinking and learning. The program provides theory and methodology for
successfully developing concept imagery and language comprehension.
Stories are high in imagery and followed by Higher Order Thinking (HOT)
questions to develop concept imagery appropriate for students in their
first year of school through to Year 8. Concept imagery is crucial to critical
thinking and reading comprehension and the stimulation and practice of
concept imagery improves comprehension on all levels. Each Workbook
contains at least 20 stories about fascinating people, animals and subjects.
This revised edition combines the consonants, vowels, colour coding and
demonstrative images of the Cued Articulation system under one cover.
Originally devised to help severely speech and language handicapped
children to see a sound and hear a letter by the use of easy and logical
hand cues, the Cued Articulation system has, over the last three decades,
proved an invaluable teaching tool.
Its potential and practicality is widespread and utilised by speech
pathologists, speech and language therapists, remedial and reading
recovery teachers who find the approach helpful in showing phoneme–
grapheme relationships; and primary teachers who use it in the classroom
to teach children the sounds of speech. Teachers who teach the
pronunciation of English as a second language to those learning English
also find it extremely useful, as do teachers of the hearing impaired who
want their students to see the sounds they cannot hear.
Teaching Oral Language
Building a firm foundation using ICPALER
in the early primary years
John Munro
ACER Press 2011
Oral language is widely recognised as an essential foundation for
successful school learning. Until recently, the acquisition of oral language
skills has been largely overshadowed by reading, writing, spelling and
numeracy and has not been considered a key component of school
curricula.
In Teaching Oral Language, John Munro redresses this imbalance through
the delivery of his step-by-step model, ICPALER. The Ideas–Conventions–
Purposes–Ability to learn–Expression and Reception framework describes
the various aspects of oral language from a classroom perspective and
demonstrates how teachers can best guide students to become effective
communicators and language users.
Designed to facilitate teaching and assessment, and to equip teachers to
hear and see students’ speaking and listening skills, ICPALER promotes the
use of self-talk and empowers students to become self-teachers of oral
language.
This breakthrough program has been used to inform several major
oral language projects commissioned by state and federal education
departments and is an indispensable resource for teachers and their
students in the early primary years.
Teaching Kids to Read
Basic skills for Australian and NZ parents
and teachers
Fay Tran
Wilkins Farago 2010
The gift of literacy is one of the most important gifts we can give our
kids. It can quite literally transform their lives, giving them the confidence
and skills they will need throughout school and into their adult lives. As
experienced literacy specialist Fay Tran argues in this timely and important
book, no child should leave school without satisfactory literacy and
numeracy skills.
The key is to teach them using phonics, the simple, effective and proven
method described in Teaching Kids to Read. Phonics is not only proven
by modern academic research to be the most effective way of teaching
literacy, it is also the method embedded at the heart of Australia’s new
National Curriculum.
Armed with the skills and techniques covered in this book, any adult can
teach kids to read.
The Method of Shared Concern
A positive approach to bullying in schools
Ken Rigby
ACER Press 2011
Originally conceived by Swedish Psychologist Anatol Pikas and adapted
in line with ground-breaking government-sponsored studies in Australia,
The Method of Shared Concern describes the multi-stage process in
which suspected bullies and their victims are individually interviewed
and eventually brought together in an effort to reach resolution. Guided
by a trained practitioner, students are actively engaged and rather than
being labelled or blamed, are empowered with a heightened sense of
responsibility and empathy toward each other and their school.
Intended primarily for use by teachers and school counsellors, The
Method of Shared Concern demonstrates through practical examples
and real-world case studies how the method can be applied in any school
environment, as one important way in which cases of bullying can be
effectively managed.
Bullying Interventions in Schools
Six basic approaches
Ken Rigby
ACER Press 2010
Bullying Interventions in Schools aims to promote an understanding of
what methods exist to address actual cases of bullying and when and how
they can best be applied. Each method is described in detail, together
with its rationale. In addition, the strengths and limitations of their use
are critically examined, drawing upon research-based evidence regarding
their efficacy and applicability for different kinds and degrees of bullying
encountered in schools.
This book examines in detail the six major intervention methods:
• the traditional disciplinary approach;
• strengthening the victim;
• mediation;
• restorative practice;
• the support group method; and
• the method of shared concern.
Kimochis characters have their own unique personalities and a whole
lot of feelings, just like children. Designed as non-gender specific and
multicultural, they promote strong parent–child connections.
Each Kimochis pillow has a facial expression that represents an emotion
on one side and the name of that emotion on the other. There are 24
emotional cushions, including angry, jealous, hurt, left out, frustrated, sad,
happy, friendly and more! Each character has a special pouch in front into
which feelings are placed.
time, while parents are better able to understand what their kids are
trying to communicate. Being able to talk about feelings helps build
Behaviors
Rebecca Moyes
Future Horizons 2010
This easy-to-use book helps walk regular and special education teachers
observable behaviours are seen in the child. This book will help make any
Connect, Communicate, Collaborate
Judy O’Connell and Dean Groom
ACER Press 2010
Our students are involved in an ‘architecture of participation’ – creating,
adapting and sharing content. Schools and school libraries have many
challenges to address to create a renewal of pedagogy and technology
work practices. We are being challenged to un-learn and re-learn in order
to grant students access to 21st century learning. Connect, Communicate,
These immersive worlds – where the world within the screen becomes both
the object and the site of interaction – are on the increase, matching the
promise of technology with the creative minds of our students. The challenge
is to accept that these interactive environments are here to stay and that
schools can, and should, embrace learning in virtual worlds. Virtual Worlds will
Designing the Learning Environment
Susan La Marca
ACER Press 2010
Designing the Learning Environment discusses how we develop effective
learning spaces with an emphasis on understanding the needs of the
major stakeholders of these spaces – students. Designing learning spaces
and, in particular, designing school libraries as learning spaces, is presented
as an approach to understanding learning needs. Specifically, planning must
be learning driven, human-centred and flexible. Designing the Learning
Environment begins with the end in sight – it looks at the research and
learning theories and uses these as the foundation for planning.
Male Voices
Stories of boys learning through music
Scott D Harrison (ed.)
ACER Press 2009
Male Voices is filled with stories of boys and men participating in the
creation of music. It brings together leading thinkers and practitioners
in the field – from the conductor of the award-winning, mould-breaking
Birralee Blokes, Paul Holley, who comments on the phenomenal success
of his choir, through to Scott Harrison and Robert Smith, who bring
research into adolescent participation and Indigenous music-making
respectively.
This book offers a variety of viewpoints; academics help to position
the study of male engagement in music throughout the life cycle, while
teachers in private and state schools across the country offer their views
alongside those of professional musicians.
The book also focuses on the interface of technology and music,
instrumental music and how music contributes to academic skills,
social interaction and life skills. Male Voices presents a diverse range
of experiences, with parents, teachers, musicians, men and boys
offering perspectives on their experience of music, for the benefit and
understanding of others.
Powerful Learning
A strategy for systemic educational
improvement
David Hopkins, Wayne Craig and John Munro
ACER Press 2011
Powerful Learning delivers an evidence-based, results-driven approach
to large-scale educational reform in schools. Pre-eminent educationalists
David Hopkins, Wayne Craig and John Munro, together with a team of
highly credentialed contributors, explicate a ‘grand theory’ of system
change that leads to measurable outcomes in enhanced student learning
and accelerated achievement over time.
Premised upon an intensive program in the Northern Metropolitan
Region of Melbourne, Powerful Learning demonstrates the compelling
impact of radical reform in an area of high socioeconomic disadvantage.
This in-depth case study approach, bolstered by reference to the broader
international experience, provides an ‘inside out’ perspective on school
improvement, with the central tenet that every student will reach their
potential.
School principals, administrators, policy makers and teachers using the
Powerful Learning approach will see a discernible reduction in the
variance of student performance, an overall rise in school standards,
and a narrowing of the educational divide.
Leadership
Great Foundations
A 360° guide to building resilient and effective
not-for-profit organisations
Catherine J Brown
ACER Press 2010
Great not-for-profit organisations are built on a solid foundation of
knowledge, creativity, agreed values and purpose and experience.
Great Foundations is a practical guide for people working in not-forprofits,
especially aspiring board members, school leaders, CEOs and
people for whom this is new territory. It’s for people who want to make
the most effective contribution they can to their chosen not-for-profit.
This book is about the importance of giving attention to all parts of a notfor-profit
organisation – and understanding why the back office should
really be front of mind at least some of the time; why a slick marketing
message is not enough without solid program delivery; why you need to
know what’s under the bonnet of your not-for-profit’s engine from a legal
perspective; and why thoughtful planning and active networks are critical
The Business of School Leadership
A practical guide for managing the business
dimension of schools
Larry Smith and Dan Riley
ACER Press 2010
The role of school principals and their executive staff has changed rapidly
and radically over the last decade. They are now required to be not only
leading educators but also effective business persons. The reality is that
most school leaders have little if any formal training for these business
roles and very limited personal experience in managing these matters.
The aim of this book is to assist school leaders in developing the
understanding, knowledge and skill of business processes that they
need to perform this ‘new’ role effectively. The Business of School
Leadership does not aim to convert school leaders into accountants or
entrepreneurs or marketing specialists; rather it provides the key principles
and tactics of business operation that school leaders need if they are
to effectively manage both the educational and business imperatives of
their schools. In a sense, it is intended that this book should become the
‘business bible’ for school leaders – the single reliable resource they can
turn to on a daily basis to assist them in addressing business issues.
each pedagogy. It is about what architecture can offer early learning and
also, what early learning requires from architecture.
Dancing on a Shifting Carpet
Reinventing traditional schooling for the 21st
century
Leoni Degenhardt and Patrick Duignan
ACER Press 2010
The role of educational leaders, in particular school leaders, has changed
radically as countries attempt to transform their education systems to
prepare young people to function in today’s world of rapid technological
and social change, economic globalisation and increased migration and
mobility. Dancing on a Shifting Carpet argues that, in order to achieve this
transformation, there is an urgent need for new paradigms of schooling
and offers practical advice on how to bring about such breakthrough
change from within schools.
This book documents how schools can reinvent themselves to meet
the needs of contemporary and future students; describes and explains
specific models that can be used by schools to reinvent themselves in this
way; and recommends a leadership model that schools could adopt to
facilitate their reinvention.
Developing a Networked School
Community
A guide to realising the vision
Mal Lee and Glenn Finger
ACER Press 2010
In the 20th century, school was the place you went to learn; in the 21st
century, the prevalence of digital technologies means children learn things
at home which they don’t or aren’t allowed to at school. This makes
the relationship between school, home and the community even more
important than ever before. Schools need to recognise this and use it to
advantage. It is time for schools, educational leaders and bureaucrats to
overcome their fear of digital technologies and embrace the challenge and
opportunities they present.
This book is the first major work which defines and explores the concept
of the Networked School Community and details the challenges and
opportunities of its implementation from the perspective of the system,
the school, the teacher, the student, the home and the parent.
technology of the 18th century classroom, the interactive whiteboard will
be the centrepiece of the 21st century digital classroom.
The Interactive Whiteboard Revolution contains eight case studies of
leading educators talking about how they use IWBs and provides a wealth
of information on:
• getting your school started with IWBs;
• selecting the right IWB technology;
• principles and strategies for effective IWB teaching;
• lesson design and software tools; and
Australian Education Review
NEW
Australian Education Review: 58
The Arts and Australian Education: Realising
potential
ACER Press 2011
Robyn Ewing
AER 58 surveys the international and national research on the role and
effect of arts-rich programming in schools and in the broader community.
Additionally, it examines the policies and practices that inhibit or support
these initiatives. It puts the case that embedding the Arts in learning
would be a powerful catalyst for educational and social reform in Australia,
since arts-rich experiences can benefit students academically and socially,
revitalise school curricula and foster the development of much-needed
creativity and imaginative thinking.
Section 1 discusses and defines ‘the Arts’ collectively, as a way of knowing and
learning – embodying play, inquiry, experimentation, creation, provocation and
aesthetics – and provides vignettes which illustrate these elements.
Section 2 reviews the growing research evidence about the impact of
the Arts on learning and the meaning and importance of ‘quality’ in
arts education; it urges a more systematic and evaluative approach be
undertaken in arts research.
Section 3 uses project exemplars to argue that the Arts provide a critical,
quality pedagogy – one which leads to relevant and flexible education –
enabling students to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
Section 4 considers several community arts education initiatives in which
arts-based programs are currently being utilised as a catalyst for social
transformation and discusses policy implications associated with realising
the potential of the Arts in Australian education, especially with the
impending national curriculum.
ACER tests are professionally developed assessment instruments that
require specialised training to ensure their appropriate, ethical use.
Eligibility to purchase these tests, therefore, is restricted to individuals with
specific training and experience in a relevant area of assessment.
As the assessment tools listed in the Education Resources 2011 Update
qualification. Most assessments listed (pages 8–20) are restricted to
school use only. Assessment tools that have a broader psychological base
may require additional qualifications.
Unless otherwise specified, the assessment tools in this catalogue require
purchasers and users to have an M level of qualification.
