Architecture for Children
Sarah Scott
ACER Press 2010
In 2009, a Churchill Fellowship enabled Sarah Scott to explore the design
of exemplar Early Childhood Centres around the world, covering 50
complexes across 10 countries. These included Scandinavia with its free
government-provided childcare and outdoor forest schools; Italy, home to
the highly influential Reggio Emilia pedagogy; Germany and Switzerland,
for Steiner, Froebel and Environmentalism; Japan’s adventurous
architecture and Shinto roots; and the UK with its comprehensive Sure
Start program combining early learning and adult outreach. All of these
countries place a high emphasis on the environment as educator and have
produced some beautiful and award-winning architecture.
The Business of School Leadership
A practical guide for managing the business
dimension of schools
Larry Smith and Dan Riley
ACER Press 2010
The role of school principals and their executive staff has changed rapidly
and radically over the last decade. They are now required to be not only
leading educators but also effective business persons. The reality is that
most school leaders have little if any formal training for these business
roles and very limited personal experience in managing these matters.
The aim of this book is to assist school leaders in developing the
understanding, knowledge and skill of business processes that they
need to perform this ‘new’ role effectively. The Business of School
Leadership does not aim to convert school leaders into accountants or
entrepreneurs or marketing specialists; rather it provides the key principles
and tactics of business operation that school leaders need if they are
to effectively manage both the educational and business imperatives of
their schools. In a sense, it is intended that this book should become the
‘business bible’ for school leaders – the single reliable resource they can
turn to on a daily basis to assist them in addressing business issues.
Architecture for Children is aimed at anyone who is interested in the
design of built environments for children; it is an exploration of the many
different kinds of early learning experiences that are available and the
innovative and inspirational building designs that have developed out of
each pedagogy. It is about what architecture can offer early learning and
also, what early learning requires from architecture.
Dancing on a Shifting Carpet
Reinventing traditional schooling for the 21st
century
Leoni Degenhardt and Patrick Duignan
ACER Press 2010
The role of educational leaders, in particular school leaders, has changed
radically as countries attempt to transform their education systems to
prepare young people to function in today’s world of rapid technological
and social change, economic globalisation and increased migration and
mobility. Dancing on a Shifting Carpet argues that, in order to achieve this
transformation, there is an urgent need for new paradigms of schooling
and offers practical advice on how to bring about such breakthrough
change from within schools.
This book documents how schools can reinvent themselves to meet
the needs of contemporary and future students; describes and explains
specific models that can be used by schools to reinvent themselves in this
way; and recommends a leadership model that schools could adopt to
facilitate their reinvention.
