David sarajishvili – founder of Georgian brandy<br />

wine production, philanthropist, public figure.<br />

Born on October 28, 1848 in the city of Tbilisi, in a<br />

renowned family of a merchant.<br />

he was educated in Europe – he graduated from the<br />

Heidelberg University in 1871 with PhD in chemistry and<br />

the degree of the Master in Philosophy; he studied agriculture<br />

in universities of Hohenheim and Hale in 1872-77; in<br />

1878 he traveled to France to study viticulture and winery.<br />

During his tenure in France (in 1878-1879), David<br />

Sarajishvili took an interest in brandy technology. In<br />

1884 based on the knowledge and education that he had<br />

received, he opened the first wine brandy distillery in Tbilisi.<br />

sarajishvili’s factory of brendy was established in<br />

1887. His liquor factory started operating the same year.<br />

There were 5 rectifying, 1 vodka, 1 liquor and 7 brandy<br />

factories under Sarajishvili’s firm, as well as a number<br />

of storages in Tbilisi, Moscow, St. Petersburg and other<br />

cities.<br />

sarajishvili’s company quickly grew and expanded<br />

throughout the Russian Empire and Europe. There were<br />

alcohol distilling factories, agricultural storages and selling<br />

networks in Tbilisi, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Erevan,<br />

Kiev, Warsaw, Baku, Riga, Kharkov, Vladikavkaz and<br />

Odessa. David Sarajishvili Company produced and sold<br />

brandy, vodka, wine, liquor, rum and absinthe.<br />

David sarajishvili's brendy were known on the<br />

market as "Natural Caucasian Cognacs" with a logo of<br />

the Caucasian goat standing on a cliff, still used by the<br />

company. In 1889-1912 Sarajishvili’s brandy won golden<br />

medals at international expos in Paris, Chicago, Brussels<br />

and other cities.<br />

Died from a severe decease in 1911.<br />

Buried in the yard of Kashveti Church, Tbilisi.<br />
