PAT DEGNAN
Quarterback, Whittier, California, Sophomore, Ht: 6-2, Wt: 180
Born: 12-4-54, St. Paul High School.
AT UTAH: When Utah opens the season the Ute quarterback will be
Pat Degnan. The battle for the quarterback slot was intense during
spring between Degnan, Warner and Hageman. After practice was over,
however, it was clear that Degnan was the man for the job. Pat gives
Utah a balanced look at quarterback. He is a good runner and excellent
passer which will help keep opposition defenses off balance. Pat has
become a team leader who has been able to pull the offense together into
a cohesive unit.
HIGH SCHOOL: Was a Helms Foundation Scholar Athlete winner.
Played on California State Championship team in 1972. Was named to
the Catholic All-American Team, All-CIF first team. Also played
basketball and baseball.
PERSONAL: Biggest thrill was playing in LA Coliseum for championship
game. Favorite pro athlete is Joe Namath. Majoring in Physical
Geography. Would like to be a forest ranger.
LES ENGLAND
Defensive End, Salt Lake City, Utah, Junior, Ht: 6-6, Wt: 225, Born:
1-15-55, Skyline High School
AT UTAH: Les gives Utah the size on the defensive line that they need.
All he lacks is the game experience that will come this fall. England
had a good spring, learning the techniques that will be needed during
the season. He will be counted on to add his experience to the defensive
end position. He has good speed to stop the wide play as well as
the inside running game.
HIGH SCHOOL: Played on state championship football team in 1971,
was named All-state. Received letters in high school for football (3),
track (3), and basketball (1).
PERSONAL: undecided major.
STEVE ENRIGHT
Defensive tackle. Bossier La. Junior, Ht: 6-7, Wt: 245, Born: 12-12-54
Bossier High School
AT UTAH: Steve was redshirted last fall to give him a year to mature.
There is little doubt that Steve has the physical abilities to become a
top-notch defensive tackle; all he is lacking is experience and playing
time which he is looking to pick up this season. During spring drills
Steve improved with every workout which is encouraging to the coaching
staff. He has great size which gives him the leverage to meet an offensive
lineman.
HIGH SCHOOL: Attended three different high schools and earned
nine letters, three each in football, track, and basketball. Team had a
13-1 record at Bossier High School and were state runner-ups. Member
of the student council and honor roll student.
PERSONAL: Father is a colonel in the Air Force. Majoring in business
Nicknamed Big Daddy.
LAYNE EVANS
Offensive Guard, Bountiful, Utah, Junior, Ht: 6-4, Wt: 215, Born:
6-23-55, Bountiful High School
AT UTAH: Layne will be seeing playing time this fall at offensive
guard. Last season he was used as a reserve defensive end but coaches
feel he has the tools to be an asset on the offensive line. During spring
he showed that he is a good blocker and can open the holes up the
middle for the inside running game. Will add good depth to a spot that
needs some experience.
HIGH SCHOOL: Earned six letters in track and football. Held school
record in Javelin, was third in state. Second team All-state football,
Second team All-state football, team was in state tournament.
PERSONAL: Undecided major. Favorite pro athlete Larry Csonka.
Father is in public relations.
