There is more talent, more depth and more experience. Offensively the Hoosiers can move the ball. Junior Courtney Snyder was No. 3 Big Ten rusher as a sophomore and broke Indiana's one-season record with 1,265 yards, winning All-Big Ten selection. Junior Terry Jones led the Big Ten in passing as a sophomore, hitting on .572 of his tosses, throwing for a league-leading nine TDs and suffering only four interceptions in 145 attempts. Receiver-wise, 6-5 Trent Smock and flanker Keith Calvin, the latter playing as a freshman, ranked fourth in the Big Ten. Obviously defense is the Indiana probelm and that appears strengthened. Linebacker Donnie Thomas, another All- American prospect, heads up a strong and deep corps, so improved that coach Lee Corso is dropping his 5-3 defense to return to his favored 4-4 this fall. The Hoosiers appear to be in a position where improvement could bring dramatic changes in the record. Although 1-10 last year they came so close so many times it fosters the thought that many can be turned around—such as a 24-22 loss to Northwestern, 28-22 to Kentucky, 35-25 to Wisconsin, plus great efforts against some excellent teams. They carried Michigan into the final quarter before losing, 21-7 and extended Michigan State in a 19-10 affair.
