240, Born: 1-21-56, Holy Spirit High School<br />
AT UTAH: Dave was the best <strong>of</strong> the freshmen <strong>of</strong>fensive linemen. He<br />
gained valuable experience during last year's campaign as a member <strong>of</strong><br />
the varsity. Dave will step into a starting spot at guard this season after<br />
playing in the backup spot last year. He proved to be a versatile performer<br />
as a freshman and developed into an outstanding blocker.<br />
HIGH SCHOOL: Team was track and <strong>football</strong> league champions.<br />
Earned four letterssm track, three in <strong>football</strong>.<br />
conference and all-south Jersey teams.<br />

PERSONAL: Person he respects the most is his father. Favorite pro<br />

WALT KAUFMAN<br />
Defensive tackle, Ontario, California, Sophomore, Ht: 6-3, Wt: 240,<br />
Born: 4-16-56, Chaffery High School.<br />
AT UTAH: Walt did such an outstanding job on the junior varsity that<br />
he was moved up to the varsity. He injured his knee in mid-season but<br />
was able to return in time to travel to Louisiana in the season finale. He<br />
made a name for himself this spring as one <strong>of</strong> the quickest defensive<br />
linemen. The coaches feel Walt has the potential to become one <strong>of</strong><br />
Utah's finest linemen. Walt has the knack <strong>of</strong> being able to fight <strong>of</strong>f the<br />
blocker and find the ball.<br />
HIGH SCHOOL: Was listed in Who's Who All-American team, allconference,<br />
All-San Gabriel Valley and prep all-American in <strong>football</strong>.<br />
Named most improved wrestler. Won two letters in <strong>football</strong>. One in<br />
wrestling. On the honor roll. Captain <strong>of</strong> the <strong>football</strong> team.<br />
PERSONAL: Majoring in entomology. Father is an electrical<br />
foreman.<br />
PAT KONS<br />
Middle guard, Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Sophomore, Ht: 6-2, Wt:<br />
215, Born: 11-13-55, East High School.<br />
AT UTAH: With a lack <strong>of</strong> defensive experience on the line, Pat will be<br />
seeing action this fall. After a fine J.V. season last year he had a good<br />
spring at middle guard. He has the quickness and speed to beat the<br />
blocker to the punch. Pat is coachable and is always hustling on the field.<br />
HIGH SCHOOL: Earned three letters - <strong>football</strong> (2), and track (1).<br />
Captain <strong>of</strong> the team and all-conference, all-county. Braveland Conference<br />
<strong>football</strong> champs in 1972.<br />
PERSONAL: Person he respects the most is his father. Majoring<br />
in commercial recreation, aspires to run a recreation area.<br />
GORDON KURZ<br />
Tight End, Oxnard, California, Sophomore 1VL, Ht: 6-4, Wt: 205,<br />
Born: 9-28-55, Santa Clara High School.<br />
AT UTAH: Gordon became a starter at tight end as a freshmen due<br />
to an injury to Fred Hobbs. Kurz handled the starting call like a veteran<br />
by keeping his poise during the season. Gordy pulled down three passes<br />
for 31 yards in his first year at Utah. He has tremendous speed for a<br />
tight end but is hard nosed when it comes to blocking. Coaches feel<br />
Kurz could defense for Utah as well as <strong>of</strong>fense. Gordy hurt a knee last<br />
spring but will be back full bore come kick<strong>of</strong>f this fall.<br />
HIGH SCHOOL: Tremendous athlete in high school. All-American<br />
and All-CIF in basketball. All-CIF in track, fourth in the nation in the<br />
long jump. Captain in all three sports — <strong>football</strong> (3), track (4), and<br />
basketball (3). All-city in <strong>football</strong>. Was on the honor roll, lettermans<br />
president for three years and won the most outstanding boy in the school<br />
award.<br />
PERSONAL: Majoring in business. Father played <strong>football</strong> and baseball<br />
in high school.<br />
