LEWIS LOVED AT EAGLE LAND

Scott Lewis has spent a fair portion 

of the past few years taking on 

the role of nomadic drifter, 

wandering his way between clubs, 

searching for a real home. 

And no, that reference has nothing 

to do with his unkempt, dreadlocked 

hairdo. 

Itinerant Lewis bounced between 

clubs and competitions, unable to 

settle and find his niche anywhere. 

After leaving his original SANFL 

club West Adelaide to head home 

and play with his mates for Loxton 

North in the Riverland in 2007, Lewis 

switched to Glenelg in 2008, 

represented South Clare in the North 

Eastern Football League in 2009 and 

finally signed with Woodville-West 

Torrens last season. 

That’s a lot of travelling and a lot of 

transferring. 

But in the case of the three separate 

SANFL stints, there has been one 

common link - Mick Godden. 

“I’ve had him my whole career,” said 

Lewis, 24. 

“Godsy had faith in me and saw 

something in me that some other 

coaches didn’t - he’s given me a lot 

of confidence. 

Despite changing clubs on virtually 

an annual basis, the silky-skilled, gutrunning 

left-footer knew what he was 

searching for. 

“While I was at West Adelaide I just 

wanted to play League footy,” said 

Lewis, who made a stunning senior 

debut in 2005, collecting more than 

30 possessions before injuring his 

right ankle in the final quarter. 

“(Coach) Shaun Rehn had faith in 

me early before dropping me and I 

left half-way through the year that 

(Wayne) Weidemann took over 

(2006). 

“I was sitting on the bench and 

being 18 years old, I didn’t like that. 

“I wasn’t playing League and it 

didn’t feel right that my folks, who 

were coming down every weekend, 

were watching me play a quarter 

of footy. 

“My partner at the time was 

telling me I wasn’t being looked after 

and the right thing would be to go 

back home and play; start enjoying 

it again.” 

In 2007 Lewis “tried to forget about 

SANFL for a while” and played in a 

losing Grand Final for Loxton North, 

before Glenelg coach Mark Mickan 

got in touch with Lewis’ dad about 

the prospect of becoming a Tiger. 

“He (Mickan) hinted at me playing 

League footy, but I only played two 

full games,” recalled Lewis, who took 

out the ‘08 Reserves Magarey Medal 

while there. 

“I wasn’t getting anywhere playing 

for the Bays, so I went to Clare to play 

with my brother, who I’d never played 

with before.” 

Lewis followed new Eagles coach 

Gooden to Woodville last year and 

signed just days out from Round One, 

before having his best-ever year. 

“I surprised myself a fair bit last 

season,” said clearance king Lewis, 

who lives with his brother and 

works in spare parts at the Maughan 

Thiem Ford Hyundai dealership 

at Cheltenham. 

“I did a full pre-season and

probably surprised a lot of people ... I 

reckon the only people I didn’t 

surprise were my mum and dad, 

who’ll always tell you how much they 

think you’ve got.” 

Lewis’ brilliant 2010 campaign 

ended on a sour note when he 

suffered a season-ending Grade 3 AC 

joint shoulder injury in the First 

Semi-Final against the Tigers, forcing 

him out of the following week’s 

heartbreaking Preliminary Final loss 

against Norwood. 

“It was pretty devastating, especially 

against my old team,” Lewis said. 

“I was pretty emotional after the 

game, but it’s definitely given me 

extra motivation this year, knowing 

that it can all be taken away from 

you, just like that.” 

Having won an U17s flag with 

the Bloods under Peter Simmons, 

an U19s flag with West under 

Godden and a Reserves pennant 

under Godden at Glenelg, there’s 

clearly only one missing puzzle 

piece, which Lewis is excited about 

striving for as a member of the 

Eagles, again with Godden in 

his corner. 

“I feel like I’m part of the nest here 

… I feel much loved,” said Lewis, who 

hasn’t had a hair-cut in about five 

years, but admits he’ll probably give 

his famous dreadlocks the chop 

soon after feeling them “snap and go 

bad” from chlorine after doing plenty 

of swimming in the pre-season. 

Lewis is very much an Eagles man 

now and it’s hard to see him 

absconding from the nest anytime in 

the future.

the ghost that talks 

It was interesting watching the 

Port v Essendon AFL match on 

Sunday evening and listening to a 

number of comments from the Fox 

commentary team. 

They were talking about the 

fact that Port looked like a team 

that didn’t know how to win and 

even when they escaped to a fivegoal 

lead they still didn’t look 

sure of themselves. From that 

point, Essendon completely rolled 

the Power as the boys from 

Alberton capitulated. 

As I was sitting in the comfort of 

The Cave watching the match I 

couldn’t help but think about the 

weekend and the SANFL Finals 

aspirants. Like the Power, they all 

fell over when the perfect 

opportunity arose to stake their 

claims for fifth position. 

The four teams in competition for 

the last Finals position all lost – 

meaning South remain in fifth 

position and now need to win just 

one more match to all-but lock in a 

Finals position. 

The Panthers, who went down 

to the Eagles at Hickinbotham Oval,

North, who are one and half 

games behind the Panthers, played 

bottom-placed Sturt and with a 

match this weekend against South 

at Prospect had the opportunity to 

be in the five come Round 23. 

North served up one of the most 

disappointing first halves of the 

year and despite a Josh Francou 

rocket at half time and a response 

from his side, it was too little too 

late. If North had won it would have 

been placed nicely to try and 

sneak into the five. 

For Port it was a slightly different 

story. They faced the reigning 

premier at Alberton in a match in 

which few expected them to 

triumph. You make your own 

chances and control your own 

destiny and Port were in front by 

11 points in the second quarter. 

From there the Dogs delivered a 

polished and classy performance. 

There are always ifs and buts in 

sport and for three of these four 

teams they will look back on the 

season as they are enjoying a

everage on Mad Monday and say, 

“If we had…..” 

No hiding his frustration

clearly understood the importance 

of Friday night’s match against 

Glenelg. 

As just another face in the crowd 

I ventured out to the City Mazda 

turf to listen to Collins’ threequarter 

time address. A certain 

Power listed player, who dons the 

number 12 guernsey, received one 

of the most public baths that I have 

seen for many weeks. 

It seems Collins wasn’t pleased 

with the effort or toughness that 

the player was delivering and 

hence let him know in no uncertain 

terms. 

Gretel kicking goals 

Former Big Brother host Gretel 

Killeen spoke at a Sturt function on 

the weekend and also tossed the 

coin at Commander Centre Oval. 

While Killeen received great 

applause at the Ladies Lunch it 

seems her biggest fans were the 

two goal umpires doing the Sturt v 

North game. 

They couldn’t miss the 

opportunity to get their shot taken 

with the former queen of reality TV. 

Roger Wills 

The ABC’s Roger Wills will call his 

last match on Sunday at Adelaide 

Oval after 40 years behind the 

microphone. 

Wills has a unique way of calling 

sport and has one of the most 

recognisable voices to recognise 

and listen to. Congratulations on a 

great career Roger and enjoy 

retirement. No doubt we will 

continue to see you at Coopers

TAMBLING HITS FORM 

Sturt set up its third defeat of 

North this season with a 

commanding first half, enjoying a 

46-point buffer at half time. 

Whatever North coach Josh 

Francou said at the main break had 

an impact on his players, but Sturt 

were too far in front and recorded 

an eight-point win. 

Crows-listed Richard Tambling 

was the star for the Double Blues, 

amassing 25 possessions, including 

16 kicks, nine handballs, seven 

marks and eight tackles. Tambling 

was aptly supported by Josh 

Cubillo (25 possessions) and Tom 

Hurley (22 possessions). 

Just as North were making a run 

at Sturt in the final quarter 

Tambling took a gutsy, diving mark 

to thwart an almost certain North 

goal. The mark, which resulted in a 

grazed face, along with the rest of 

his game earned Tambling five 

votes in the ‘be active’ Star Player 

and R.O. Shearman Medal. 

Judged by members of the 

SANFL’s 200 Club on a 5-4-3-2-1 

basis for every minor round match, 

the award carries with it a $3000 

first prize.

Lewis Hender from the Glenelg 

Football Club is this week’s 

Powerade Star Search winner. In 

only his fifth League game, the 17 

year old proved his role as a 

prominent and exciting forward. This 

was also recognised by The

West Adelaide. Lewis finished the

STARS SHINE AT PLAYFORD ALIVE 

For the first time in 

its 52 year history, 

Central District will not 

be wearing its usual 

team colours this 

weekend. 

The Doggies will 

discard the blue, white 

and red on Saturday to 

wear a unique design Andrew Hayes. 

incorporating the 

Novita Children’s 

Services logo. The guernseys will be auctioned on eBay 

after the game. 

The club has supported Novita for the past two 

seasons, raising funds for the organisation to provide a 

range of services to children living with disabilities and 

their families. 

Chris and James Gowans – both Novita ambassadors – 

enjoyed, “Bringing a smile to the faces of the wonderful 

children we’ve met through Novita.” 

“The guernsey is a great initiative and we would actually 

prefer to keep it ourselves but appreciate they might 

generate a couple of dollars for these kids,” James said. 

“The Novita star on our shorts has been something 

the players wear with pride but this takes the club’s 

relationship with Novita to a whole new level and one 

we know our supporters and administration values 

enormously.” 

Novita Chief Executive Glenn Rappensberg said he was 

“deeply appreciative of the generosity of spirit shown by 

the Central District Football Club”. 

WEST END STATE TEAM 

In the absence of a State Game this 

year, West End and the SANFL have 

partnered to announce an honourary 

West End State side for 2011. 

Last weekend, the forward squad was announced and 

this weekend, the Sunday Mail and ABC will reveal the 

midfield squad. 

Once the backline squad is revealed next weekend, it’s 

up to you, the football supporter.

Magarey Medal night this year.
