Canton, Salem split twinbill
Plymouth Salem won the tight
one, the opener of Saturday's
double-header at Plymouth Canton,
and it didn't come easily.
The second gam* was no contest,
however. The Chiefs rolled
up a big lead early and never let
up.
The resulting split, Salem winning
by a 6-5 margin and Canton
by a 15-4 score, left both teams
at .500-Salem is 5-5, with Canton
at 6-6.
The opener was definitely the
more dramatic contest. The
Rocks led 2-1 going into the seventh,
but Canton rallied to tie it
and force extra innings.
In the 10th, it finally seemed
Salem had put the game away
with a four-run rally in the top
half of the inning. But not so
fast: Jfhf^Chiefs had something
left, too. They scored three runs
in their half of the inning before
four runs and knocked in four
more.
BASEBALL Noonan slugged a three-run
homer in the fourth and finished
falling a run short. _
with three hits and three RBI.
Pat Noonan was the only Chief Jeff Opalinski was just as effec-
with two hit*. Jason Bricker, tive, with three hits and three
John Wright and Kurt Richards RBI, with Brickfer added two hits
each had a hit and a run batted and two RBI. Bryan Dixon had a
in.
hit and scored three runs.
Jason Mortiere was the losing Pat Nelson was the winning
pitcher for Canton. He went 9 pitcher, working all seven
2/3 innings, allowing six runs on innings and surrendering four
nine hits and a walk, striking runs on nine hits and a walk,
out eight.
with eight strikeouts.
The second game was entirely
"We're starting to hit the ball
different. The Chiefs pushed
pretty well," said Canton coach
across 11 runs in the first four
innings to open up an 11-3
"""Scott Dickey. "Our pitching has-
advantage.
n't l\een bad, it's been pretty
Wright and Noonan were two
good, like it has all year.'We're
of the bigger offensive powers in
just not making the plays at cru-
the win. Wright collected four cial times.
hits, including p two-run home "We're playing well enough to
run in the first inning, scored win, we're not getting the key
hits, making the key plays when
we need them. But if we keep up
this intensity, I think we'll be in
position to win some ball
games."
Last Friday, Canton (fcd just
the opposite. The Chiefs led 2-0
until the fourth, then were up 3-
2 entering the sixth. But the
Mustangs got two runs in the
sixth and two more in the seventh
to post a 6-4 triumph at
Canton.
Anthony Pastor absorbed the
loss He pitched all seven
innings, giving up two earned
runs on seven hits and a walk,
striking out five.
Wright was the only Chief
with two hits, one a double, and
he had one RBI. Richards contributed
a two-run double and
Dave Walker had a Tut and
scored two runs.'
Chiefs collect Cougar trophy with 5 lsts
The trip* for Plymouth Canton's
worth it.
The Lady Chiefs journeyed to
Saturday for the Cougar Invitational
hosted by Grand Rapids
Catholic Central and came away
with a first-place finish.
Into each life a little rain must
Jenny Trott to defeat Farmington,
10-8.
Trott was touched for four
"He missed the 400 and 800
The Hawks are looking to
Granger has the area's best
In the second game, the Saints
Crusader errors aided their
demise; Van Doom was the losing
runs, with five strikeouts in
seven innings.
McGue had a hit and two KB I
