EMORY
DANIELS
With warm
weather upqe
us, golfers
already are fill-
ing up the
greens and golf
terms increas-
ingly are crop-
ping up during
conversations at
social gather-
ings. Golf surely
must be one of
the top, if not
the top, partici-
patorywarm- weather golf in this country.
I recently came across IGOLF,
a popular and talked-about Web-
site on the Internet. IGOLF also
is on American Online and for
that reason, too, has been writ-
ten about in computer maga-
zines. A few months ago I
learned that this site has strong
local connections.
And so when you visit
http://www.igolf.com/index.html
you will be taking advantage of
many features developed by two
area residents, Dave Richards
and Holly Geoghegan.,
The top of the IGOLF home
page invites you to the site's golf
chat. Links include This Week in
Golf, Leaderboards, Instruction,
Tfre Tours, Club Daze, Game
Room, Swizzlestick G&CC,
Equipment, Travel, Architec-
ture, Writer's Block, Photo
Gallery, Industry/Stocks, Golf
History, Environment, and
IGOLFOLOGY. In the center of
the page are links to headlines of
current golf stories, and high-
lights.
"vices, a public relations, media,
marketing and networking con-
sulting firm baSed in Bloomfield
Hills that specializes in the golf
business.
In.public relations circles,
Richards is known for his efforts
in developing northern Michigan
as a golf destination. Recognized
as one of the top golf photogra-
phers in the country, his photos
have appeared in many national
magazines. "—
Geoghegan has served as
director of communications for
the Ladies Professional Golf
Association, was executive direc-
tor of Golfweek Academy, and
has created marketing programs
for Spalding, Taylor Made, Ash-
worth and others. A freelSnce
golf writer and reporter. sW
helped form the International
Network of Golf.
Golf Marketing Services,
founded by Richards in 1990,
represents more than 20 golf
resorts and golf courses in Michi-
gan, Lake of the Ozarks, and
Florida. Among its Michigan
clients is Grand Traverse Resort,
Shanty Creek, Boyne USA Gar-
land, and Bay Harbor.
In addition, GMS is the lead
industry consultant for IGOLF,
the comprehensive, interactive,
electronic golf area on AOL and
on the Web. In 1994, Richards
merged GMS with Sportventures
International, a marketing and
PR company owned by Geoghe-
gan.
In 1995, the two teamed up on
several new and innovative pro-
jects, including IGOLF. GMS
also was instrumental in guiding
InterZine Productions, Inc.,
formed in 1994 to produce inter-
active content for online services,
through the golf business last
year. Under GMS' guidance,
InterZine launched IGOLF in
1995 and it became th^May 6,
"We have been very impressed
with Golf Marketing Services'
- knowledge of the golf industry,
its quick grasp of this enormous
project and ability to get
results," said Brian Henley, co-
founder of InterZine and IGOLF.
"Golf Marketing Services has
assisted us in taking IGOLF to
all areas of the golf industry,
from the manufacturers and
associations to the media and
golf personalities." - .
Henley adds that Richards and
Geoghegan are industry insiders
who have quickly acclimated
themselves to the cutting edge of
cyberspace and its unlimited
potential in relation to their role
as industry consultants whose
job it is to disseminata informa-
tion.
"Its the most fascinating pro-
ject we've ever worked on." said
Richards. "The online world is
not limited by any boundaries,
real or imagined. That allows
editors and companies to be
totally creative in developing
editorial and marketing con-
cepts. The industry reaction to
InterZine and the IGOLF project
has been overwhelmingly posi-
tive."
"Being an interactive medium,
the feedback is immediate and
significant," said Geoghegan.
"Everyone in the industry now
knows it is the wave of the
future."
Now that you know about
these two, if you enjoy golf or not
