Mac says get to work for consumers

I began writing this
column some 10 ~
months ago at the
reguest of this newspaper
(very smart people
these editors are) and I
must tell you that it is
still exciting each time
I sit down with my
Macintosh. I saj^'
"Mac," I haven't
thought about what I
should write for this
column, let me look into your screen for
a few minutes and something will come
to mind. And then it happens, and away
I go on the keyboard as fast as my
thoughts can race.
Mac says - you know how busy it is
in the service industry from May
through September, why don't you tell
consumers why and how they can save
moaey by preventing needless service
on major home appliances. I say, good
idea, let's go.
1. Consumers are already bringing
their dehumidifiers to my shop for
repairs or calling me to ask why the
front coil is covered with snow when
they recently turned it on. Folks, the
dehumidifier is your basement will not
work properly during'temperatures and
relative humidity which are too low. It
4if"ho^yet time for you to expect that
product to do its job. There will be millions
of room air conditioners and dehumidifiers
sold in the next few months,
and that's not necessary if only consumers
would take the product to the
car wash and hose it down completely.
Make sure the components are dry
before you plug it in.
2. Spring and summer storms bring
to our homes and neighborhoods some
weird electrical happenings. Power
surges are the most frequent, which
cause serious damage to out appliances
and electronic equipment. Purchase a
surge protector from your local hardware
store and install it where you
think necessary. You might even think
about shutting off the main circuit
breaker during power outages and turn
it back on after power has been
restored in the surrounding area.
3. Refrigerators which ran find all
winter will begin to break down in
large mfmtfers and people will wait
days for service because the service
industry is busy cleaning dirty condensers.
Get a long handle brush from
your hardware store and using your
crevice tool, clean the condenser, under
and in back of the refrigerator. This is

the biggest cause of extra energy consumption
during the summer months
and the most common cause of no
refrigeration in the American home.
4.The clothes dryer vent line needs to
be taken completely off and cleaned
out. The hinges on the flapper outside
need to be brushed to ensure positive
shut off. The critters and birds are
building an alarming amount of nests
this year and you can guess where. If
your vent line is plastic or tinfoil, it
should be changed to solid aluminum.
There are over 13,000 house fires a
year started by a clothes dryer, improper
vent line is responsible for the
majority.
5. The hoses to the washer should be
checked where the metal pieces are at
the ends. Any corrosion appearance
means the need for new hoses. A ruptured
hose to a clothes washer can
cause a ton of damage to a home. Stop
by my store sometime and I will show
you what a hose looks like that caused
thousands of dollars in damage to a
home. While you're checking the hoses,
adjust the temperature to the washer
so that medium temperature wash
equals 100 degrees. The whites will be
whiter.

6. Give your dishwasher a good inside
cleaning with the Tang breakfast drink.
Turn on the hot water faucet until the
temperature is at its max, turn on the
dishwasher for four minutes and shut it
off. Pour a while pint jar of Tang breakfast
powdered drink into the water in
the bottom of the dishwasher and let it
run through the whole cycle. The dishes
will come out much cleaner from now
At this point I turn the keyboard over
to "Mac" and I tell him to write a few
comments.
