BIDDIng PrOPOSAL FOr THE 18 th IFOAM OrgAnIC WOrLD COngrESS 2014
Date and Outline of the Program
Date
The proposed dates for the 18th IFOAM Organic World Congress are
23 July - 02 August 2014 or 04-14 October 2014
As explained later in this document, The Lütfi Kırdar Congress and Exhibition
Centre is an entity that belongs 25% to the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry
and 75% to a consortium of a great number of businessmen. The centre is one
of the most important congress centres of Istanbul. Because of its physical
features and its the advantageous location the centre has an intensively loaded
programme. Upon our request to the centre we have been allocated for two
options. As the Bugday Association we do believe that both suggested date are
appropriate.
Outline of the Program
Traditional Production is a hot topic at global and EU level but also in Turkey
due to the harmonization process but also worldwide. That is the reason why the
Bugday Association thinks there is a strong need to address the issue of these
products being usually produced in harmony with nature. Most of these products
do not meet the standards required by the different legislations and are subject
to disappear. Under this theme, challenges and opportunities of traditional
production in relation to organic will be explored and alternative certification
schemes will be addressed.
Additionally, local food systems and urban-rural linkages: In addressing the
question of how to make food supply chain more sustainable and secure, it is
widely acknowledged that the local food systems provide a tremendous potential.
From local to global, benefits of local food systems (environmental, social and as
well as economic) will be explored and good practices will be exchanged.
Good Governance:
Our second theme is linked with governance especially to explore ways to
strengthen regional cooperation which is already treated within IFOAM under the
governance task force findings and recommendations but our aim by choosing this
topic is to share our experience on networking while gathering others experience
through the congress but also enable an environment to assess/monitor the
change after the implementation of the recent IFOAM good governance strategy
in the coming three years. The end of the three years implementation process
for the adopted good governance recommendations will also create a perfect
moment to assess the training/information needs for further efficiency and
increase in participation. Under this theme we aim to first enable the sharing of
the progress then formulate sessions to identify the gaps but also opportunities
for the future.
Enhancement of regional partnership:
Both above mentioned themes would be used as a basis for exploring ways to
enhance and strengthen regional partnership. This theme will also need to gather
feedback from different IFOAM members in the world in order to target relevant
issues that could be better addressed through regional partnerships. However,
Buğday is also planning to allocate special session on participation/Information
exchange and advocacy. The aim of this theme is to create, enhance synergies
through diverse relevant topics identified throughout the three-year preparations.
However, despite the framing outline Buğday is willing to increase its
communication with different IFOAM members in Turkey but also worldwide to
ensure a programme agreed by a high number of members.
