PoE - Power over Ethernet
The PoE standard IEEE 802.3af was adopted in 2003. It defines a procedure
for the joint transmission of both data (e.g. TCP/IP packets in
Ethernet) and power on a common twisted pair cable Cat.5/6/7.
Distinction is generally made between the devices PD (Powered
Device, power consumer) and PSE (Power Sourcing Equipment, power
supplier). Classic examples of PD devices are IP cameras, access points,
print servers or also media converters.
The standard defines the transmission of a nominal DC
voltage of 48V DC/350 mA < 100 ms) over a length per
switchport of up to 100 m; the maximum power level is
15.4 watts. Intelligent detection and protection mechanisms
are used to determine the performance class and
if necessary protect connected non-Poe devices in the
network against damage.

Further subdivision defines midspan/endspan operation.
When using an endspan as a power source, consumers are supplied
directly from a PoE device, e.g. a PoE switch.
When using a midspan as a power source, by contrast, power is supplied
from a PoE device arranged downstream of a non-PoE switch,
such as a PoE hub or PoE injector.
The concepts are illustrated in the diagrams:
Midspan-Betrieb
In midspan operation, users can decide, e.g. with a PoE
hub, to use a larger number of ports for supplying power.
Supplying individual consumers with power using a
PoE injector is a more cost-effective method.
A PoE splitter can be used to supply non-PoE devices if
these have a socket or comparable power connection.
In this way, decentralised consumers can be protected
against power failures at very low cost with a UPS
solution.
