Rubel celebrated his 66th birthday,
three days prior his actual
birthday which was the 16th of
April. In attendance were a dozen
or more friends, called the
"ROMEOs" (Real Odd Men Eating
Out). The group has been doing
this for the past thirty years,

SAN DIMAS — The cabin in
the meadow - with a "musky
smell" emanating from old logs
and a sod floor -- linger in David
Lemon's memory.
He had come in the mid-1950s
to this place in Utah's Uinta
Mountains with his parents and
grandparents to visit the girlhood
home of his grandmother Hilde.
"She took me to a small window
and pointed to the line of
the forest on the edge of the
meadow," Lemon recalls. "She
started to tell me about how the
Ute Indian hunting parties used
to walk past the cabin - how
they would come to the door and
ask for food. They always gave
them food."
It is this memory, Lemon
says, -- along with the Western
movies of the period - that
sparked his interest in the Old
West and ultimately his passion
for Western art. Today, his
sculpture appears in galleries and
private collections throughout
the United States, Canada, Europe
and the Far East. Viewers
can marvel at his mastery at the
30th annual San Dimas Festival
of Arts Western Art Exhibition
and Sale April 28-30 when he will
be honored as the festival's Special
Exhibiting Artist. He will discuss
his work at a seminar set
Saturday, April 29 at 10:30 a.m.
in San Dimas City Council
Chambers.
There is a reason, he says,
why he chose sculpture as his
medium. "In high school ceramics
class, when I couldn't throw
a pot to save my neck, my
teacher suggested I try sculpting
the clay. I won three scholarships
for the five pieces I
sculpted that year."
Lemon didn't take the scholarships.
The year was 1965,
war was raging in Vietnam and
he joined the Navy instead.
It wasn't until 1977 -- when
he created a clay likeness of Buffalo
Bill, entered in the Utah State
Fair, the piece took first place.
"I was set on the road that I'm
going down today because of
that. I gained the confidence I
needed to go out into the competitive
world of art.

He remembers a year when
he took actor Iron Eyes Cody on
a tour of the gallery.
"When I came to a bronze of
mine, he began to sing an Indian
song. My eyes teared up, people
stopped in their tracks - all just
stood there listening to his incredible
voice...".

distinguished lecturer-chair at the
University of Piemonte in Milan,
Italy, from March to May 2007.
He will hold the Vercelli Chair of
Twentieth Century History of
