10 – THE FREE PRESS – January 29, 2013 NDG NEWS Depot needs new home By Isaac Olson Come March 31, the NDG Food Depot ill have to move from its long-time locaion at the corner of Oxford Ave. and de aisonneuve Blvd. and now the board of irectors is scrambling to find a new ome for the food-relief organization. Board president Lynda Porter knew the ease was up at the end of March and she alled the depot’s landlord earlier this onth to negotiate a new lease. She was old the building is for sale and the nonrofit organization has to move out. While she is hoping to bargain for a few xtra months in the building, she said the oard has hired a real estate agent and is sking the community for help in scoutng out a new, larger space to continue erving the population. “We’re in dire need of finding a new lace, so we’re using all our forces out here to get the word around,” said Porter. According to a press release, the new acility should be located within the area efined by Monkland Ave., St. Jacques t., Cavendish Blvd. and Decarie Blvd. utdoor space and roof access would be n asset. Officials with the depot have already been discussing the possibility of joining up with another community partner or two and expanding, allowing more room for its range of educational programming and community services. If the depot does not find a space, Porter said there is a plan in place for storing its stock of food. She said there is also a plan in place to continue distributing emergency food baskets to some 600 residents weekly and operating the home delivery services from various locations around NDG if needed, but workshops and other programs will stop if a new space isn’t found. Because the depot had a commercial lease on its space, there is no legal obligation on behalf of the landlord to advise its tenant of its plans. The space was shared, but the other tenant has already left. This comes at a time when community space is limited in NDG and property prices are continuing to rise, but Porter said board members are keeping their hopes up. “Everybody is quite optimistic,” said Porter. Couple offering helpinghand steal wallet Police Report Station 11 The Police Report is intended to inform readers of recent police activity in the community. The articles are written from information taken from police reports and given to the reporter by a Station 11 constable. Just after 8 pm on January 21 a Montclair Ave. resident decided to get her two cars out of the driveway so she could shovel the snow. One of her vehicles was stuck and as she struggled, a couple walking by offered to help. The female suspect suggested she drive while her male friend and the owner push together, explained Station 11 constable Peter Mandelos. The car owner agreed, allowing the woman into the vehicle. The car was freed and the victim thanked the couple before they went on their way, said Mandelos. A short time later, the victim realized her wallet was missing from her purse, which had been in the car when the couple helped get it unstuck. Vandal caught spray painting On January 18, just before 10 pm, an officer patrolling near the intersection of Prud’homme Ave. and Sherbrooke St. noticed a man standing near a garage in a back alley in an area that has had complaints from neighbours about graffiti, said Mandelos. The officer approached the man slowly, but when the suspect became aware of the cop, he walked away. The officer stopped the man, who smelled of alcohol, and asked him why he was standing near a garage that was covered in spray paint. The 18-year-old CDN resident claimed he had just urinated, but the officer found no evidence in the snow of such an action. The constable asked the young man to put down a bag he was holding and when he complied, there was an audible hissing sound coming from the bag, which gave the officer reason to look in it. He discovered several cans of spray paint in a colour matching that on the garage. Is it the end of the line for the NDG post office? roger Haughey roger’s neighbourhood I was surprised to hear last week that anada Post is in the midst of a monthong public consultation about the future f the post office located at 5751 herbrooke St. West. The NDG landark, designed by T.W. Fuller and built in he early 20th century, has served as DG’s main post office for as long as nyone can remember. Canada Post is proposing to close the ervice counter at this location and two thers in the West End, one in Snowdon nd one in Westmount. Judging by the risk business I witness every time I go here, it seems that the customers’ needs re being well served in the existing locaion(s). However, the NDG post office is too mall to support the “Poste Moderne” oncept whereby letter carriers use trucks nstead of walking on their routes, and hey deliver both packages and letters. It urns out that NDG is one of the few eighbourhoods that gets its mail this ay, and the closing of the retail counter ould be the beginning of the end for our ocal post office. I for one greatly prefer the real post ffice to the contract facilities in drug tores and elsewhere, but the fact emains that packages are becoming the ain business of the post office. However, Canada Post is only proposng the closing the NDG, Snowdon and ictoria post offices, and wants to hear rom you. He loved Wolverine, Spiderman, Tintin and Batman, and unlike other young guys, he didn’t want to be them; he wanted to draw them. “I think I was about three when I started drawing, and when I got older, it stuck with me. It wasn’t the comic’s story that piqued my interest; it was the visual that captivated me,” said the 29-year-old NDGer, noting an eye for art runs in his family. His father painted as an amateur artist. “I didn’t set out to be an artist. In fact, music was my thing. I’ve been writing hip hop music since 1999, and doing graffiti was just part of that culture.” In 2004, he went to Concordia to pursue a fine arts degree, but he took time off to put out three hip hop albums. Now he’s back at Concordia and he’s painting like crazy. “I’ve been working on my art there for over a year now. I realized that I really wanted to do art and that’s why I’m back.” Clement now finds himself reflecting on what excites him visually, and it is comics and illustration. Bright colours and powerful emotions showing exaggerated expressions are all depicted simply but boldly. “My art is super strange; it’s a meeting of pop art and neo-graffiti. His art is quizzical, fun and imaginative. The colours are incredibly vibrant and loud. The big images jump off the canvas. His paintings can be as large as 30 feet long by 15 feet high. Now, Clement is experimenting in high realism, innovative objects that he calls composites. He is working on a weapon series that could well figure in a James Bond or sci-fi flick.
