Silver celebration
Greg Kataroyan is gearing up for the 25th anniversary of Automotion Collision, which he officially
pened in July of 1989 when he took over his father's already seven-year-old auto-repair garage.
ataroyan said his dad helped out around the shop after he retired in 89. The business has become
lmost 95 percent bodywork and only a small amount of mechanical repair. The shop is located at 5349
e Maisonneuve Blvd., near Prud'homme Ave.
Language police continued from p.1
“Every time the OQLF comes up, people
just laugh.”
The sticker in question reads: “I’m
active in NDG. Je m’active à NDG”, an iniiative
of the Corporation de développeent
économique communautaire
CDEC), which works to promote local
usiness and active transportation in colaboration
with Equiterre. The size of the
English and French lettering is the same
instead of conforming to the law that
states English lettering must be half the
size of the French.
CDEC CDN-NDG’s director, Claude
auzon, said similar promotions are
ound throughout the city under different
istrict names. Coincidentally, the man
ehind the sticker’s creation, a former
mployee of the CDEC CDN-NDG, Paul
oy, resigned from his position to go
work for OQLF back in July, said Lauzon.
oy managed the buy-local campaign for
everal years before taking the provincial
ob as a language-law enforcer.
Lauzon learned of the sticker controvery
when he watched the news report.
hen he spoke with an OQLF agent, he
as told there was no complaint anyhere
on record about the sticker.
owever, without getting into the
pecifics of this case, Martin Bergeron,
spokesperson for the OQLF, said there
Former CDEC CDN-NDG employee Paul Roy
holds up promotional material for the “I'm Active
in NDG” campaign that has recently caused a stir
with language police — the agency that Roy now
works for.
may not have been a complaint about
CDEC in the system because the complaint
is against the store’s owner for displaying
the sign.
Meanwhile, Lauzon said the OQLF will
send a written notice to the CDEC about
the sign and, in the coming weeks, his
staff will take photocopies of the notice to
all the stores in NDG that still have the
stickers in their windows, notifying them
that they could become the subject of a
language-police investigation if they don’t
take them down.
