I had no control of my eyes or lips.” The nurse suspected Bell’s palsy and sent Morin to the nearest hospital with a neurological unit, said Morin. The condition was confirmed and she was quickly administered treatment, but doctors said the damage caused by Bell’s palsy, a form of facial paralysis resulting from a dysfunction of the cranial nerve, can be permanent. Former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien’s face was partially paralyzed for life when he suffered an attack as a child. It took six weeks to fully recover from the condition, said Morin, but she still has some pain if she makes a sudden facial expression. The paralysis was only on the right side of her face. Despite the medical setback, Morin is looking forward to the year ahead, continuing the initiatives of last year. The meeting will be preceded by a public consultation meeting, at 6 p.m., concerning the following proposal: Draft by-law RCA13 17206 amending the By-law concerning fences and hedges (R.B.C.M., c. C-5), so as to allow openwork fences in the front yard of a corner lot. Geneviève Reeves, avocate Secrétaire d’arrondissement Five residents came forward during the January 14 borough council meeting to discuss snow clearing efforts after the late December storms. However, not all residents were unhappy with the nine-day cleanup. While CDN resident Joseph Joncas commended the borough for clearing the streets and sidewalks, others like NDGers Sharon Sweeney and Michael Simkin asked for better sidewalk clearing. Sweeney said she was forced to walk in the street with her children when headed down to the local park only to discover the skating rink was still buried in snow. Simkin wants at least one sidewalk cleared per street as soon as possible after a snow storm so people with reduced mobility can get around. Borough mayor Lionel Perez said the winter storm created a domino effect as crews were at first focused on clearing snow around and on the way to the borough’s hospitals. Borough director Stéphane Plante said the crews also contended with space issues as the snow narrowed sidewalks and streets between parked cars and buildings, slowing the process by one day. Residents can also call 311 to report problems, said Perez. Perez reiterated that the borough is relooking at its strategy to be better prepared the next time. Photo: Isaac Olson McQueen silenced When an NDG resident asked about snow clearance operations, NDG councillor Peter McQueen attempted to add his two cents to the discussion as is normal during a question and answer period. But, Perez, who already had responded to the questioner, would not allow McQueen to speak, citing time constraints. McQueen’s attempts to protest the ruling were quashed. Later in the meeting, Snowdon councillor Marvin Rotrand added to a discussion just as McQueen had tried to do earlier. Rotrand was allowed to speak without protest. This incident sparked a visual reaction from both McQueen and Projet Montréal party leader, Richard Bergeron, who was in the audience. Bergeron raised his arms in disgust as McQueen shook his head and smiled in disbelief. $1 million invested in traffic calming The borough council approved a by-law authorizing a loan of $1 million to implement traffic calming measures in the borough. In the past, those measures have included speed bumps, bollards, solarpowered radar signs and billboards reminding drivers and cyclists to respect the rules of the road. Empress update The council approved an agreement in principle between the borough and Cinéma NDG regarding the transfer of ownership of the Empress Theatre on Sherbrooke St. Cinéma NDG has until December 31, 2013 to complete the financing package for its project to rehabilitate the building, but the ownership, according to borough director Stéphane Plante, comes with conditions and the borough will have a lien on the building to ensure those stipulations are met. Those stipulations for the new owners include keeping 50 percent of the building for cultural activities, continuing to pay taxes and remaining a non-profit organization. —Isaac Olson

The question of vocational schooling came up when one of the parents talked of her own experience as a hair dresser. Players from all provinces across Canada competed to represent our country at the world championships in Turkey. Tennis Canada praised our clay courts and staff. It expressed its desire to return to our club again. The club is looking for more members, in particular, a group of young strong players to shore up our interclub team.
