Woman’s wallet lifted from
purse at CSL Shopping Centre

The Police Report is intended to
inform readers of recent police activity

by a Station 9 constable.
As she gave directions to three young
men, a woman’s cash-stuffed wallet vanished
from her purse at the Côte St. Luc
Shopping Centre.
Station 9’s Constable
Vincent DeAngelis said the 70-year-old
victim visited an automatic teller
machine (ATM) and withdrew several
hundred dollars in cash before shopping
in the mall’s Jean Coutu pharmacy on
ecember 20 around 12:30 pm. The

Committee (CSLCC) have been caring
for 12 cats that became dependant on an
elderly resident of Eldridge Ave. who, up
until this fall, left cat food under her balcony
every night.
“We picked up, neutered, vaccinated
and dewormed 10 of those cats,”
explained the CSLCC’s Shelley Schecter.

“We believe there are other victims in
the shopping centre and we would like
that they call or come down to the police
station to report it,” said DeAngelis
The first suspect is described as an
English-speaking, white male around 25
years old who stands about 177 centimetres
and weighs approximately 85 kilos.
The other two have similar descriptions
of being about 20 years old, 172 centimetres
and 70 kilos.
Police warn seniors to use caution in
snow
All too often, there are accidents involving
heavy machinery and senior citizens
this time a year, said DeAngelis. Police
are reminding older residents to use caution
in the winter.
DeAngelis said seniors should avoid
going outside during snowstorms and
clearance operations if possible. If necessary,
he said they should keep their distance
from heavy trucks and plows.
People should wear bright or reflective
clothing, use caution at crosswalks and
stay within the driver’s field of vision.

Volunteers go to Eldridge Ave. daily to
feed the cats as the homeowner now
lives in an assisted-living residence.
The plan, said Schecter, is to re-trap
the six cats in the spring and relocate
them to an area where volunteers can
more easily feed them.
The cats are sterilized and will not
breed, which is a key part of controlling
the feral and homeless cat population.

Bracelet campaign geared
to giving kids courage

When she went in for her latest flu
shot, 11-year-old Ilana Schacter admits
she was a little scared, but she held tight
to her handmade, woven string bracelet.
The bright colours and soft thread
reminded her to have courage as she got
the shot.
The experience, she said, gave her the
idea to create an organization called
Courage for Kidz, dedicated to helping
children be less afraid when receiving
medical treatments. Working with her
friends at JPPS-Bialik school, her
younger brother, and youth at the Beth
Zion Congregation, she is now producing
and distributing the handmade bracelets
to hospitalized kids around the area.
On January 20, Schacter and her family
hosted an event at the synagogue for
kids to learn how to weave the bracelets,
which will later be brought to the
Montreal Children’s Hospital. Attached to

each bracelet is a small tag with a quote
from Schacter: “Even though this bracelet
cannot take away all your fears, I hope it
will remind you to be strong and that you
are not alone.”
Stacey Schlein, Shacter’s mother, said
her daughter started weaving the items
this summer and distributed them to
family and friends. When her rabbi suggested
she do something for the community
as part of her Bat Mitzvah — a Jewish
coming-of-age ritual for 12-year-old girls
— Schacter decided to put her braceletweaving
skills to work.
She started a website
(courageforkidz.org), began weaving
bracelets with her friends and on
December 17, brought dozens to the
Shriners Hospital for Children.
Schacter said she it feels good to help
kids feel less afraid.
“I know that if I was in that place, I
would be like really scared, so I’m hoping
it will help them,” said Schacter.
