Swiss Trade November 2010 11
able for what you have to offer.
Germany
2009 was one of the most difficult years for
business transactions between Switzerland
and Germany in the post-war period.
“It reached its dramatic peak in the second
quarter, with a 25% drop in trade volume”,
explains Ralf J. Bopp, director of the Chamber
of Commerce Germany-Switzerland.
Even in 2010, the numbers are not back
up to their former level, partly due to the
mutual integration of the countries. Both
operate in the same sectors – such as electronics,
the chemical- and pharmaceuticalindustries,
machinery and textiles – and the
same world-markets and branches.
Outsourcing projects, of course,
turned out to be an advantage for both
sides, but the close interaction and similar
economic structure of the states has not
helped to stabilize or re-inflate the market.
Ralf J. Bopp is confident that the already
strengthened dynamics of the global market
will definitely bring about positive growth rates
for business transactions. For 2010 the chamber
forecasts expect a 6–7% growth in trade
volume between Germany and Switzerland.
“Make no mistake, even with this slump
in trading, with almost 20% of all exports
Germany is still by far Switzerland’s most
important trading partner.”
