A Cosmos of Creativity
Shakespeare lies at the centre of our dramatic
universe. Here at Stratford, we celebrate him in
our theatres by honouring honouring his text and by by placing
it in the context of the work of his predecessors,
contemporaries and successors, so we can better
understand his breathtaking achievement. In doing
so, we range freely through the best and most
enduring works of the dramatic canon.
This season, you can explore the diversity of
Shakespeare’s genius in three such very diff diff erent erent
plays as Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and
Julius Caesar. You also have a rare opportunity
to compare his work to that of his friend and
rival Ben Jonson, whose Bartholomew Fair is a
brilliant satire of life in London, Shakespeare’s
adopted city, or with that of Jean Racine,
whose Phèdre is searing drama from a diff erent
dramatic tradition. Both these plays are
masterpieces in their own right – and to see
them performed is to discover how radical
are the diff erences between the world’s
greatest playwright and his nearest peers.
Shakespeare’s unprecedented
exploration of the human comedy paved
the way for such subsequent dramatists
as Anton Chekhov, Edmond Rostand and
Oscar Wilde, whose work also features on our
stages this season. His infl uence reveals itself
even in our two musicals, one of which shares
its ancestry with The Comedy of Errors while the
other draws directly on Romeo and Juliet.
Our own writers here in Canada owe no less to
Shakespeare and the extraordinary creative ferment
of his age. George F. Walker’s Canadian classic
Zastrozzi uses the Jacobean revenge tragedy as its
point of departure, while Sunil Kuruvilla’s Rice Boy,
newly revised for our production, is rooted, like
some of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, in the tensions
between parents and children. So too is Morris
Panych’s The Trespassers, a brand-new play that
receives its world première here this season.
We are delighted to welcome you to this, our
57th season. We hope you will enjoy exploring with
us the astonishingly varied dramatic universe that
Shakespeare helped to create and that will always
honour him as its centre.
“Remember you are but
Adam, flesh and blood”
by Alexander Leggatt
Held in the heat of late August in the disreputable
London suburb of Smithfield, the Fair that gives
Jonson’s play its title is a feast for the senses: food,
drink, songs, trinkets and sex are all for sale. At the
centre is the pig-tent run by the Gargantuan pigwoman
Ursla, whose sweating flesh embodies the
steamy atmosphere in which she works, and whose
tent, besides selling ale and roast pork, doubles as
a privy and a brothel. Jonson dramatizes both the
carnival energy of the Fair and its gritty commercial
side. Ursla gives her attendant Mooncalf a detailed
lecture on the fine art of cheating customers; and we
hear that the ingredients of Joan Trash’s gingerbread
are “stale bread, rotten eggs, musty ginger, and dead
honey.” As the ballad-singer Nightingale entertains
the crowd, the cutpurse Edgworth moves among
them, plying his trade.
Though four centuries separate us from Jonson’s
world, the Fair is a place we can still recognize:
for us it calls up memories of hot lights, candy
floss, calliope music, big fuzzy stuffed bears, hot
dogs whose ingredients we would prefer not to
know about and, in the thickest part of the crowd,
pickpockets. Its climactic entertainment is a puppet
show in which a classic love story is reduced to
raucous obscenity. Rowdy, sleazy and dangerous, it
provokes the question: who would want to go there?
The answer, it seems, is nearly everybody. The play
opens in a Puritan household, a place we might
think was as far removed as it could be from the
carnival licentiousness of the Fair. But even in that
household the Fair exerts a magnetic pull. Littlewit,
author of the puppet play, wants to see it performed,
and circumvents his Puritan in-laws by getting his
pregnant wife, Win, to pretend a longing for roast
pig so that they can visit the Fair for the sake of her
health. The family’s resident spiritual advisor, Zealof-the-Land
Busy, not only goes along with the idea
but goes along to the Fair, where he plans to indulge
in his two favourite pastimes: “I will eat exceedingly,
and prophesy.” Littlewit has drawn up a licence for
the marriage of Bartholomew Cokes and Grace
Wellborn, but Cokes, an amiable idiot with a thirtysecond
attention span and a childlike delight in
everything around him, is more interested in going
to the Fair than in his approaching marriage. Cokes’s
servant Wasp, whose futile attempts to control his
master leave him in a state of perpetual rage, and
Grace, who is too dignified for the Fair, both resist
going; but they are swept along by the tide. Two
men-about-town, Quarlous and Winwife, go along
as the audience does, to watch the fun. And besides,
they both have their eyes on Grace.
Everyone, in short, goes to the Fair, whether they
want to or not, and it is not just an afternoon’s
outing after which normal life resumes. Virtually
everyone who goes there is in some way
transformed, sometimes in ways that reveal a
disconcerting affinity between clean-living London
and disreputable Smithfield. Two respectable city
wives are recruited as prostitutes, and Jonson drops
hints that their new roles are just a more direct
expression of the lives of women in the conventional
world. At the start of the play, Littlewit shows off
3
4
his wife’s charms and invites his friends to kiss her.
When she protests, he tells her to “be womanly.”
Grace Wellborn, explaining how she came to be
the ward of Justice Overdo (more of him later), says
bluntly, “He bought me.” Claims of immunity collapse.
Wasp and Busy violently denounce the Fair, and
find themselves right at home in it. The Fair is full of
noises, and Wasp and Busy, both formidable noisemakers
(though Busy insists his is “a sanctified noise”),
join right in. Grace has stood aloof from the Fair, but
decides who will marry her by making herself the
prize in a game of chance.
Paradoxically, the one character who seems
untouched is Cokes. His experience in the Fair is a
catalogue of losses – his sword, his cloak, two purses,
the woman he was going to marry, a handkerchief,
a collection of hobby-horses and gingerbread – but
his innocent delight in the Fair is such that none of
these losses touches him for long. As the cutpurse
Edgworth remarks, “A man might cut out his kidneys,
I think, and he never feel ’em.”
Given that much of the Fair’s activity is borderline
criminal, and sometimes crosses the border, where
is the law? It too is absorbed into the Fair, in the
person of Justice Adam Overdo, who moves through
the play in disguise, spying on what he calls its
“enormities” and building up to a great judgement
scene at the end in which he will denounce the
wrongdoers and rescue the innocent. Except that
he gets the wrongdoers and the innocent muddled
up; he is beaten and put in the stocks, where he is
joined by Wasp and Busy, who have also denounced
the Fair (in this play those who sit as judges end up
sitting as criminals); and his big judgement scene at
the end does not go as planned, to put it mildly.
There is one character who defers to authority: the
madman Trouble-all, a former court officer whose
mind snapped when Overdo fired him, and who
will now do nothing, including dressing himself,
drinking and urinating, without Justice Overdo’s
warrant. Overdo’s principal disguise is that of Mad
Arthur of Bradley, a local eccentric known in the Fair
as an extempore orator; Overdo has enough wit to
enjoy the irony of being “a Justice in the habit of
a fool,” but the disguise is closer to his true nature
than he realizes, and through Overdo and Troubleall
Jonson suggests that behind the respectable face of
authority lie folly and madness.
On the other hand, the people of the Fair, though
Jonson never sentimentalizes them, show a
surprising capacity to pull together and help each
other when trouble strikes. They may be a temporary
community, but they are a community. And their
appeal to the physical side of life makes us confront
a basic truth about ourselves. Quarlous at the end of
the play tells Adam Overdo: “Remember you are but
Adam, flesh and blood! . . . Forget your other name
of Overdo, and invite us all to supper.” Overdo agrees,
and the final promise of a communal feast in which
everyone will join reminds us that what we have in
common is the body, with its appetites, its exposure
to pain and sickness, and its tendency to embarrass
us at inconvenient moments. The Fair deals in flesh
and blood, particularly flesh, and to that reality
no one, not even the most respectable theatre
audience, is immune.
Alexander Leggatt is professor emeritus of English at the
University of Toronto.
The Story
On the morning of the annual Bartholomew’s Day
fair, proctor John Littlewit is visited by Ned Winwife
and his companion Tom Quarlous. Winwife is wooing
Littlewit’s widowed mother-in-law, Dame Purecraft;
he has a rival, however, in the form of a Puritan
named Zeal-of-the-Land Busy.
Next arrives Humphrey Wasp, manservant to
Bartholomew Cokes. Cokes intends to wed Grace
Wellborn, the ward of his brother-in-law Justice
Adam Overdo, and Wasp has come to pick up the
marriage licence. Cokes himself then appears,
accompanied by Grace and Mistress Overdo, and
announces his desire to visit the fair. The entire
party, including Littlewit, who has written a puppet
show to be performed there, decide to go as well.
Meanwhile, unknown to all the others, Justice
Overdo also goes to the fair – in disguise, so that he
may see for himself what “enormities” are perpetrated
upon its grounds.
Soon, all these fairgoers are swept up in the
crimes and confusions of a world inhabited by the
likes of the ruffian Jordan Knockem, the cutpurse
Ezekiel Edgworth and the pig-woman Ursla. By the
end of the day, none remain untouched by their
experiences.
Ben Jonson – playwright
Benjamin Jonson was
born in June 1572, a
month after the death of
his father, a minister. He
attended Westminster
School but was unable
to afford a university
education. Instead, he
became apprentice
to his stepfather, a
bricklayer. He soon
left this employment,
however, to join the English Expeditionary Force
in Flanders, where he claimed to have killed an
opponent in single combat. In 1594, he married Anne
Lewis, who bore him four children, none of whom
survived childhood.
By 1597, Jonson had become an actor in London
and had begun writing plays for the theatre
manager Philip Henslowe. In 1598, he was arrested
for killing fellow actor Gabriel Spencer in a duel and
narrowly escaped hanging – though he was fined
and branded on his thumb. The same year saw his
first big success as a playwright, Every Man in His
Humour, followed in 1599 by a sequel, Every Man out
of His Humour.
Jonson was imprisoned for his outspokenness in
the 1604 satire Eastward Ho! which he co-wrote with
George Chapman and John Marston. He also wrote
two Roman tragedies, Sejanus (1603), the content
of which brought him before the Privy Council to
answer charges of treason, and Catiline (1611). His
finest works, though, are considered to be the four
great comedies Volpone (1606), Epicoene (1609), The
Alchemist (1610) and Bartholomew Fair (1614).
Despite his brushes with the law, Jonson became
a favourite at the court of King James I, where, in
partnership with the designer Inigo Jones, he became
the era’s greatest deviser of the spectacular form
known as the masque. In 1616, the year he published a
collected edition of his works, he was granted a royal
pension and became unofficial poet laureate.
After Charles I replaced James on the throne in
1625, Jonson ceased to be a regular provider of
masques. He was appointed to the post of city
chronologer in 1628, but the same year suffered the
first in a series of strokes that left him paralysed. He
died on August 6, 1637, at the age of 65, and is buried
in Westminster Abbey, where a marble plaque bears
the inscription “O Rare Ben Jonson.”
A Kaleidoscope of Colourful
Characters
Bartholomew Fair is a brilliant satire of class and
character in Jacobean London. But far from
being bitter, it is a very warm and deliciously
funny argument for tolerance. This warmth and
inclusiveness, this humanity, have made me fall in
love with the play.
Ben Jonson was a deeply ambiguous individual.
He aspired to be the court poet and moral arbiter
of the age, yet his plays document the life of the
grittiest aspect of the criminal class. He himself killed
a fellow actor during a fight on the street. This was a
man who was full of life, and his plays demonstrate
that vibrancy. His love of language mirrored the
contradictions in his character. Jonson believed
personal corruption bled into one’s grammar and
speech. Consequently, while he was capable of
writing beautifully lyrical passages, his special talent
was to write the most hilariously tortured syntax and
scatological invective ever created.
This is an amazingly detailed and complex work –
yet it gives the reader or audience member a feeling
of chaotic improvisation. It is like a kaleidoscope in
that it moves a group of extraordinarily colourful
characters into a seemingly infinite number of
groupings. These movements break up the normal
societal cliques and expose the individuals to new
influences, opportunities and temptations. We
thereby discover the truth at the heart of them all.
For assistance
See the house manager or any theatre
staff. We’re here to help.
In case of emergency
Theatres and exits are equipped with
emergency lighting. Our staff are trained
in evacuation procedures. You are
requested to follow their instructions
and remain calm. You will be directed
to a meeting area, where you are to
remain unless otherwise advised by staff
or emergency personnel. If you discover
a fire, you should activate the nearest
fire alarm and, immediately following
evacuation, identify yourself to a staff
member and provide details.
Cameras, cell phones and snacks
Please enjoy your snacks outside the
auditorium and bring only bottled water
inside. Cameras are not permitted. Please
double-check that your cell phone is
turned off.
First aid
Automated external defibrillators (AED)
are located in the lobbies and balconies
of the Festival, Avon, Tom Patterson and
