Longwood day SchooL Beacon’s Longwood Campus is the mainstay for private day school and special education for elementary aged children and adolescents. Our licensed and highly trained staff caters to students with autism, mental impairments, specific learning disabilities, in addition to behavioral and emotional disorders. Teachers are seeing advances in student’s behavioral growth through Character Education which focuses on teaching coping skills and channeling energy via role play, stories, and acting. At Beacon, students have a voice in their learning goals. They have an individual portfolio of their academic work with an explanation of their grades on how to improve. Portfolios are used to promote student reflection on their work and build self-confidence. Through technology, reading and music, students like Matt (photo, above right) are equipped with the needed fundamentals to excel in school and go onto college. 8 Beacon Therapeutic 2010 Annual Report BIg IntenSIve outpatIent program (BIop) Our Big Intensive Outpatient Program (BIOP) offers mental health services to children 6 to 18 years of age who are experiencing moderate to severe emotional and behavioral problems at home, in the community, and at school. The program’s focal point is based on group therapy emphasizing a structured, supportive, and therapeutic environment. When Dramol (photo, right) arrived at Beacon, he was in third grade and several educators were convinced he would never learn to read. Significant family challenges hindered his desire and ability to achieve. Now, an honor student with attainable goals, Dramol has words of advice for his peers, “Do not be scared and try to learn from other people’s mistakes.” His behavior has improved tremendously during his time at Beacon. As he advocates, “Set goals and do not stop until they are achieved. Never back down on your goals.” Dramol’s future goals: Reintegrate into his home high school and attend college to be a chef.
actIvItIeS/offerIngS Staff at our Longwood Campus offers a host of engaging activities that support and promote success. An array of programs focusing on proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle skills meet the age appropriateness of each child. Beacon’s garden project, funded by Annie’s Organic Food Products, has been a huge accomplishment and is planting seeds of hope. With staff assistance, children cultivated a garden during the summer months and were able to harvest tomatoes, cucumbers and green peppers. The pumpkins are still growing! Often times, the children Beacon serves are unfamiliar with vegetables and rarely have fresh produce available in their own homes. This has been a great opportunity to add vegetables to their lives and all the children were excited to eat the food they had grown. In addition to the garden project, Beacon has adapted a Medical Care Notebook for our homeless families. This booklet gives families a central, organized location for their medical needs and information. It is a place to record important phone numbers, medications, family history and store their medical card. Activities at Beacon’s Longwood Campus are a broad presentation of our conviction that establishing genuine relationships with children is the foundation we use to help students learn self-sustaining ways of relating. chILdren’S heaLth InSurance program reauthorIzatIon act (chIpra) CHIPRA is an outreach program funded through a federal grant targeting children in-need, families and adolescents in the Chicago area who are without health coverage. Bringing the office to the family, our team has all the necessary materials to assist parents and independent teens through the process of enrolling in All Kids, a low to no cost health insurance administered by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS). Families are connected with a Medical Home and linked with a health care resource once approved for the program. n Beacon Therapeutic 2010 Annual Report 9
