SheLter outreach ServIceS (SoS) Kenyatta and her family became homeless due to a substandard living environment and have been participants of Beacon’s SOS program since 2009. On the road to financial and housing stability, Kenyatta is learning a trade to increase her income and recently obtained permanent housing. Developed in 1992, Beacon Therapeutic’s Shelter Outreach Services (SOS) helps break the cycle of homelessness for families. A key group of professional staff delivers community-based mobile mental health services in 31 emergency/interim, transitional, and second-stage Chicago shelters to help families rebuild their lives and find permanent housing. Once families obtain permanent housing, Beacon Therapeutic additionally provides essential follow-up care for up to six months. n 10 Beacon Therapeutic 2010 Annual Report “Beacon has long been the expert on serving homeless children and the whole family, which had not been a common priority of homeless programs. Over the past few years, however, Beacon has become a leader in shifting priorities to put greater emphasis on children—how they are impacted by various levels of homelessness, and how to intervene to hopefully break any future cycle of homelessness. The pace, quantity, demands, and difficulty levels have been designed for our students’ needs.
