Dear Friends of Beacon,
Never be ashamed of where you come from, it is where you are going that counts. Be proud of who you are, your roots and know you
are the author and illustrator of your own destiny. One of our teachers reiterated this to a group of students not so long ago, and the
words have been in my mind ever since. While past events and decisions, good or not so good, certainly shape who we are today,
the future belongs to everyone who believes in the value of their dreams and goals. Beacon Therapeutic has been catering to at-risk
children and families for more than 42 years. Children and families who are homeless, who are traumatized, who have the desire to
excel educationally, yet have had limited options. With the guidance and direction of our professional staff, they are changing their
lives and creating their futures.
Research indicates that every year 600,000 families with 1.35 million children experience homelessness in the United States,
making up about 50 percent of the homeless population throughout the course of a year. At least 68 percent of 8th graders cannot
read at grade level, and most will never catch up. Approximately 1.2 million students drop out of high school every year. These
stunning statistics paint an extremely bleak picture as families everywhere are being torn apart and facing daunting challenges in
an ever-changing society.
Despite negative energy and the fiscal catastrophe that has been paralyzing our nation, Beacon Therapeutic has managed to stand
unwavering in the community. We are taking the reins, tackling the important issues and moving forward. Our state-of-the-art
programs combined with a strong culture of collaboration, philosophy of care and forward-thinking approach have allowed us to
continue providing the best possible care, treatment, and resources to the children and families we serve. In total, our extraordinary
and highly focused support programs were delivered to more than 3,047 unduplicated clients this past fiscal year.
Beacon’s footprint in the social services arena continues to expand more and more every day. The great strides in advancing
our mission would not be possible without the passion, drive and dedication of our innovative staff, respected board of directors,
outstanding community supporters, charitable donors, and ground-breaking partnerships. True to our motto, Empowering Lives and
Changing Futures, Beacon is committed to those we serve. I am confident that all of us together, acting on this conviction, will keep
Beacon a first-rate organization during these uncertain economic times.
