air forCe base
Located 14 miles west of Grand
Forks, the Grand Forks Air Force
Base is home to about 2,000
people. Our communities have
hosted the Grand Forks Air Force
Base for nearly 50 years. The
base employs more than 3,000
military personnel and civilians,
with an annual payroll of about
$130 million and a total economic
impact in the community of over
$433 million.
In 1998 and 2005, our
communities were presented with
the Abilene Trophy, the Air Mobility
Command’s highest honor for
recognizing community-based
relationships and support. The
Grand Cities continue to set the
standards and are a model around
the country for ideal communitymilitary
relations and partnerships.
The base was awarded the Air
Force Outstanding Unit Award for
2004–2005.
The Grand Forks Air Force Base
is home to the 319th Air Refueling
Wing. The base has been actively
involved in the global war on terror,
including participation in homeland
defense and Operations Enduring
Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, with
its members continually deploying
overseas.
Grand Forks Air Force Base is
currently in a transition process of
changing the base’s mission from
an aerial refueling mission to an
Unmanned Aerial System (UASs)
mission. The base is expected to
receive the Predator MQ-1 and the
Global Hawk RQ-4. Currently, the
Department of Homeland Security
fly’s and operates their Predator’s
from Grand Forks Air Force Base.
The base offers free tours to
groups, maintains a speaker’s
The Grand Cities are proud neighbors and partners with
the men and women serving at the Grand Forks Air Force
Base. The positive relationships we have built have had
lasting impacts, as a number of retirees choose to call our
community home and are active residents of the Grand Forks/
