For forty years, Moshe 

Rabbeinu guided our nation 

with a steady hand. Despite 

the difficulties in leading the 

fledgling nation through the 

barren desert and all the 

challenges it posed, he never 

lost faith in the people. 

Throughout our numerous 

sins he was always our most 

vocal supporter, staunchly 

defending us in the eyes of 

Hashem. Never again have 

we been blessed with a 

leader like him. As the end of 

his tenure drew near, Moshe 

was faced with the task of 

preparing and training his 

successor, making sure that 

Yehoshua would be prepared 

for his new role as leader. 

In his initial conversation 

informing Yehoshua regarding 

his new position, 

Moshe proffers seemingly 

contradictory statements re-

of G-d”. Immediately afterwards 

Moshe warns him that 

they are troublesome and 

stubborn. No one knew the 

people like Moshe, yet here 

he is offering up two entirely 

separate pictures of who they 

are, to the person who would 

soon be tasked with guiding 

and dealing with them! 

R’ Shimon Schwab explains 

that at the core of 

every Jew is a pristine holiness 

that comes from our 

original acceptance of the 

Torah. While it may be covered 

up by our various iniquities 

and transgressions, 

nothing can change the fact 

that deep down we possess 

an essence that is unsullied

remember that underlying it 

all, is the very real purity of 

a nation who are children of 

G-d. 

It is not just the leaders 

who are faced with this 

struggle. On a daily basis we 

all encounter people who aggravate 

and annoy us tremendously. 

We can never allow 

ourselves to forget with 

whom we are dealing.

and Aunt Tyra on the recent Bar 

Mitzvah of their grandson, Ariel 

Ze’ev Lieberman.

us all proud, and gave a beautiful 

speech at his Bar Mitzvah Party. 

We have it on somewhat more suspect 

authority (Aunt Tyra) that 

Ariel did magnificently in shul on 

Shabbos as well.

could have been there with you are 

very proud of you, and look forward 

to celebrating with you at

Travels With Tatty: 

‘Cast’ of Characters 

T hese past two weeks I have 

been klumping around with a 

medieval-esque device strapped 

about my left leg from the foot to 

the knee. This device, euphemistically 

known as a “soft cast”, is intended 

to make its wearer walk 

with an awkward, unbalanced gait, 

become grumpy, partially immobile, 

and appear vaguely comical 

to others. It is also (quite secondarily, 

no doubt) intended to secure 

the bones of the foot to promote 

healing. It does the former quite 

well. Jury’s out on the latter. 

I decided not to initiate a Hobbles 

With Tatty column and, therefore, 

cancelled the various meetings I 

had scheduled week before last in 

Memphis and other exciting 

venues - and stayed home. I confess 

I milked the circumstances for 

a bit more comfort from my cancelled-upon 

clients than my putative 

injury warrants, but such is 

poetic (and business) license. As 

this week it is our patriotic duty to 

work as little as possible, I stayed 

put yet again – making it two 

weeks in a row. 

One of my more philosophically 

inclined clients pointed out that 

“life”, as he put it, has a way of 

sending us messages in a timely 

and appropriate way. Perhaps I 

was traveling too much? Perhaps I 

had too many things to do at home, 

like selling and buying a house? 

Perhaps I needed some down 

time? Perhaps he should not quit 

his day job. 

Next week, as it happens, I have 

one of those rare circumstances 

where an appointment with one of 

my clients is to be right here in 

Los Angeles! The corporate headquarters 

for this company is in 

Beverly Hills, although my work 

with them up till now has been 

exclusively at other locations. So, 

next week again, I will stay in LA 

(at least till Wednesday). I will be 

able to enjoy the visits of BJ, 

Malka Leah and Gracie… 

I believe this cast (soft or not – it’s 

a cast) can come off after next 

week, so by the time I get back on 

the road I’ll be foot-loose. The 

timing is pretty good, wouldn’t 

you say? Perhaps I was traveling 

too much. Perhaps I needed some 

down time. Perhaps we have to 

start packing up the house week 

after next…

he weather in Los Angeles 

has been delightful. 

As usual. 

Every single day. 

And Tatty has been home a lot 

lately, which makes it even nicer. 

Lots of excitement in these parts, 

what with buying and selling 

houses, and JJ and Kayla moving 

into their roomy, lovely, apartment 

on Sycamore! 

As we type this, we await the arrival 

of BJ, being gallantly picked 

up by JJ, even though his flight is 

1 1/2 hours delayed. What a bro’ 

in law! 

In one of our last blowouts at the 

Kramer Resort and Spa, we

hosted a Shalosh Seudos (very 

fancy!) for Shirley Lebovics’ new 

daughter in law and Machetainista, 

Racheli and Miriam Liebermann. 

Tzippy Kohen gave a Dvar Torah 

and knocked everyone’s socks off. 

The food was great, since a lot of 

ladies who co-hosted brought stuff 

over, and we had the lovely flowers 

from Shirley’s party on the 

previous Thursday night.

Then there was Tzipora Wisnicki’s 

wedding, where Mommy 

got to show off the snappy new 

outfit that 

Kayla helped 

her find 

downtown, 

and Tatty got

Two nights before, we had another 

wedding...Ral (Rachel) Guy’s. 

(Very Sefardi!) Kayla had a miniclass 

reunion, and spent most of 

her week being busy with quasi 

matron of honor duties. 


Until they moved out this week, 

we had a lot of fun sharing the 

house with the Rabinowich family, 

formerly of Westwood. 

Yehuda somehow sensed the 

sanctity of Zaidika’s office, and 

would stand at the threshold and 

whisper: “ Bye-Bye Zaidika” on 

his way out the door to school in 

the mornings. He wouldn’t step

beyond the threshold. Smart kid. 

Yehuda, his parents, his Babika, 

and his one true love, Shalva, enjoyed 

an outing together to Fish 

Grill last week. 

The Altschulers have been enjoying 

a few last chances in the 

Kramer pool, and we even got to 

host Rabbi Chanan Gordon 

and his kiddies for a swim session. 

Last week the Lebovics hosted a 

gorgeous Sheva Brachos for Tziporah 

(Wisnicki) Abraham at 

their home, and Mommy printed 

out and framed “a few” (70+) 

photos as table décor...

From Around the Nation 

California: This week Agudath Israel of 

California will be hiring Rabbi J.J. Rabinowich 

to be the new director. Rabbi Rabinowich, 

a talmid of the Mir Yeshiva in New 

York and Jerusalem also studied in Ner Israel 

for a number of years. Most recently, 

he has held the position of Campus Outreach 

Director for the Jewish Awareness 

Movement (JAM) in Los Angles on the campus 

of UCLA. Rabbi Rabinowich will officially 

begin his work under the guidance of Presidium 

and Rabbinic Board of Agudath Israel 

of California beginning July 1st. 

JJ’s exciting new job was also reported in the Yated and HaModia! 

Yes, our JJ, of ‘Kol Kramers Dvar Torah’ fame! 

(We knew him BEFORE he was world famous in Los Angeles.)

Summer is in full swing her in 

Lakewood – and going quite

I must say that most days (ok, not 

“every single day”) the weather 

has been just lovely and quite conducive 

to refreshing morning 

walks by the lake. 

It was great having Mommy and 

Daddy Josephs here this past 

week, we hope you come back 

soon! (Zev and Shera, it’s our turn 

next time!)

News From New Jersey 

Malka Leah Writes: 

we’ve had much fun-time-at- 

Uncle-Zevie-and-Aunt-Shera’s 

pool including BBQ nights and 

fundays – even Uncle BJ and his 

boys got in on the action (we 

missed you Aunt Adina!). 

Thanks to Uncle BJ’s helpful 

hints, my cell phone, which fell to 

the bottom of the pool as I was 

reaching to save little Miriam 

(she’s fine), did indeed revive itself 

after spending some time in 

Aunt Shera’s toaster oven on 

warm… 

Hey, he said he read it online, and 

it actually worked! 

Recent “funtime with Mommy and 

the kiddies trips” include NYC day 

with Cindy and co. where we took 

many modes of transportation including 

car, bus and subway and 

lots and lots of walking, and enjoyed 

the exhibits at the Met – the 

armory collection was the hit with 

the group – as well as the exhilarating 

sounds, sights and smells of 

Central Park (water bomb notwithstanding, 

Asher Busher!). Thank 

you Ahron J., for joining us, and 

Cindy for always being the tour 

guide with the mostess – we look 

forward to future joint ventures in 

the coming weeks….

We got to see a family of baby 

dolphins jumping over their 

mommy – Asher’s expert photography 

was indeed able to capture a 



fin or two on digital camera for 

your viewing pleasure… 

Racheli has joined the work force 

and is making us all proud as a day 

camp counselor for three year olds 

– she’s doing a wonderful job according 

to her boss and is gearing 

up for the second half of the summer 

when she will be off to Indiana 

at Bnos Maarava. 

Meanwhile Devorah is having a 

blast (we hope, though she had a 

cold this week) out in Michigan at 

Agudah Midwest with about 27 of 

her Lakewood pals who all seem 

to have had the same idea for the 

summer – she’ll be back in two 

weeks to join Chaya Fraida Salel 

in a summer internship at the 

Kitchen Outlet Center. 

The boys are starting their last 

week of Yeshiva/Camp 

in 

between various 

viruses 

(campitis??) 

and Kayla, 

Rivka and 

even little 

Miriam are all 

enjoying their day camp fun. 

Miriam basically wears her bathing 

suit and carries her camp bag 

around from morning to night either 

in anticipation of, or reminiscing 

about her day of “simin in da 

pool wif Morah Rochel in a 

camp!” It’s very cute. 

For any of you who may have 

been concerned – her hair is still 

growing in an outward direction, 

but gravity has not yet kicked in so 

we may just be bringin’ back the 

afro look! Peace out man! 

It was great catching up with our 

buddies Rivkie and Moishy 

Schechter from Chicago last week, 

when they came in for Yehuda and 

Esti Schechter's son’s Bar Mitzva,

I love the 4th of July. 

It’s when Pyromania is ac- 

tually patriotic. 

Shmuel and I went shop- 

ping this afternoon for 

fireworks in Owings mills. 

Somebody was selling 

them out of a trailer. The 

trailer was packed floor to 

ceiling with fireworks. 

One of the management 

personnel (who undoubtedly 

lives in that trailer) 

noticed a redneck wearing

a cigarette 

while 

shopping over 

a couple hundred 

pounds 

of explosive 

material. After 

a few 

short panic-laden screams 

to the smoker...the cigarette 

was extinguished. 

I’m sure Faige wrote 

about our camping trip. 

Check out the SUV tent! 

I was able to sleep in the 

car (just like a real homeless 

guy!), while the kids 

slept in the tent-part. 

We really roughed it. We 

gathered the wood… and 

lit the campfire…roasted 

wieners & toasted marshmallows…you 

betchya. 

We were one with nature. 

And when nature calls…we 

listened. (Um, Sorry about 

your home there, Mr. 

squirrel…) 

We took the kids the 

other night to see the Orioles 

play the [despised] 

Yankees. 

The kids were yelling to 

the players loud enough 



for the players in other 

games to hear them. Of 

course, they were second 

loudest; the biggest baseball 

enthusiast in Camden 

Yards that night was 

Faige, who literally lost 

her voice advising the batter 

to hit properly (why 

can’t they just listen to 

her!). 

She and the boys actually 

know how to enjoy a baseball 

game – as opposed to 

her husband/ father who 

found his Treo and hot dog 

a lot more exciting than 

watching a 5 ounce corkfiled 

sphere get hit with a 

stick. 

Faige brought food for the 

whole family, but I couldn’t 

resist taking advantage 

of the kosher hot dog 

stand they have there to 

fress out at the game. A 

couple of times.

in NY, until we return next

it is LEGAL!! 

He and Shmuel 

took a trip

works as they 

could find. Tonight 

we did a 

fireworks display 

for the 

neighborhood 

here. 

OK Just our 

kids watched 

but it was loud 

enough for all 

the neighbors 

to come out 

and trace that insane smoke to our 

house backyard!! The truth is, it

was so cool and memorable for the 

kids. Yaakov had a blast. 

We miss Adina!! 

She is doing great in camp B”H. 

She is making new friends learning 

new songs, and writing many 

letters. (What a difference there is 

between a boy and a girl! ) We fax 

her and write her. 

My sister Elisheva, who bought 

Adina stationery with her name on 

it, has actually faxed Adina 

EVERY day since she got to 

camp. What an Aunt! Adina 

knows what the Perlsteins do 

every day! 

My mother is in Florida this week 

with my grandmother. My father 

went for the day on Wed. 

OK….. SO the past few weeks. 

We had Shmuel’s Chumash play. 

He is so cute. One teacher told me 

if she had to write a book about 

Shmuel and describe his character, 



she would write, “Hi! Catch me if 

you can!” When I heard that I had 

to laugh because that is Shmuel. 

We were very proud to see that at 

the after party there was one boy 

who did not get a fruit roll up, and 

Shmuel quickly ran and gave the 

boy his own Fruit roll up. We only 


found out about this afterward because 

I was not there to witness 

this. 

We went to the JCC the other day 

to get our membership and the kids 

had a good time running around 

the Gym. 

Has there been a Kol Kramers 

since Chananya’s camping trip 

with the kids? 

He and the boys went camping and 

made a fire. They roasted Marshmallows. 

Adina and I joined for the campfire 

and supper. 

The boys stayed , slept and 

Chananya made another fire the 

next morning and fried eggs for 

them. 

We can’t wait to do this with the 

Feders, and when Asher comes to 

us for a few days, Chananya wants 

to take the kids again. ( Maybe 

that’s a good time to go with the 

Feders then??) 



Yaakov has been enjoying some 

Quality time with Betzalel who is 

getting all the time in with Yaakov 

before Yaakov goes to Romimu. In 

the last three days they have spent 

almost 18 hours together (!!!) - 

that would be 6 hours a day for 

three days….. 

OK folks time to spend some quality 

4 th of July time with 

Chananya !

H i everyone! Well, lots 

has happened 

since I last filled 

y'all in on our 

lives. 

JJ was hired, 

B"H, as the new director of 

Agudath Israel Los Angeles under 

the guidance of Dr. Irving 

Lebovics. His job is very cool- 

mixing legal stuff with Jewish 

stuff to be an all around awesome 

macher for Jewish causes in LA 

and beyond. When he next writes, 

I'll let him describe what exactly it 

is that he will be doing. 

In the meantime, we got an apartment 

on Sycamore- into which be 

are thank G-d finally settling. 

We are so excited to host BJ this 

shabbos with the PU's and of 

course Tracy and Brigeeta next 

week. I feel like I'm playing house 

in this huge (to me) three bedroom 

duplex. It doesn’t hurt that mom 

and dad let us take much of their 

furniture which, in Adina A's well 

placed description, looks "pretty 

conservative". Heh heh heh- yup, 

but we love it!! 

A few candles and funky plants 

and we're on a fast track back to 

our generation's decor. 

We now have a guest room (JJ's 

office) so we can comfortably 

have two people sleep over for

in with Yehuda- who is, by the 

way, REALLY cute these days. 

Sorry Chumie, I think Yehuda 

wins this week- he started sleeping 

in a bed and is trying to learn how 

to make on a potty. And he is obsessed 

with cars- he now entertains 

himself for long chunks of time- 

the first time this has happened 

EVER- since he was born. He will 

sit, now, knowing that I'm in the 

house, and play with his cars and 

trucks for 30 minutes without 

coming to me for help! 

This is HUGE!! 

Mom and Dad took us out to Shiloh's 

tonight, which was uber-nice 

and delicious- thanks PUs!! 

Chan and Faige- have a blast! 

Adina- we're coming to the 

Upsherin- Yay!! We’re invited-

H ey everyone! 

Happy holiday weekend to one 

and all. (or was that last weekend? 

I wouldn’t know...) I only realized 

it was July 4 when I heard someone 

on the radio say 'Yom HaAtzmaut 

bi Artzot Habris' (Ed. Note: 

It is unlikely that the Israeli radio 

announcer said ArtzoTTT 

HaBriSSSS, but we love you, 

Chumie…) in a cab...so how has 

everybody been?? 

Major Mazal Tov to my favorite 

couple, Shira and Yeedle, on the 

birth of their beautiful baby girl 

yesterday- we are soooo excited! 

Mazal Tov Malka leah, on another 

fantastic, successful coaching job. 

I cannot wait to see this baby!! 

Mazal Tov to Kayla on ur move. 

Mazal Tov JJ on ur job, tho my 

condolences on the wardrobe requirements, 

a shtickel different 

from last year I should think...

Anyhoo, where did we leave off? 

Right before Dani’s Aufruf I think. 

Well, it was beautiful- we were in 

the perfect location, the meals 

were in the shul like 2 centimeters 

from our building so it was mucho 

convenient. The 3 days between 

that shabbos and the wedding I had 

the car, (hear evil: 'he he he') and 

man, I was ALL OVER TOWN. 

It was so great to be behind the 

wheel again! 

I mean, I was doing tons of prewedding 

errands, running round 

with the Kallah for last minute 

stuff, picking up shtick from the 

Gemach, finally bringing Kayla 

Pitter her baby present.... I forgot 

how useful an automobile can be! 

Anyhow, with much nerve, the 

young couple ripped the car off us 

during Sheva Brochos, but somehow 

we are finding it in our hearts 

to forgive them. 

Back to the wedding, the main attraction 

of course being Reuven's 

tux- it was a really beautiful event. 



Sooooo much fun, really, really, 

really, pumped up dancing, just 

tons and tons of fun. i brought 

along Marissa Cherry of JAM, 

who did makeup and hair, babysat 

Reuven, and makeup touch-ups for 

photos at the end of the wedding. 

She was GREAT! 


I wore my bright blue sneakers for 

dancing and I don’t think I stopped 

moving (jumping) the entire time- 

such a blast. 



Sheva Brochos passed in a whirlwind 

of staying up too late and 

driving to and from Beit Shemesh 

a lot and I eventually got sick, (big 

thank you to both Chaya Sara and 

Yoel for pitching in and coming 


over to help out with Reuven while 

I was grossly under the weather) 

(and of course YM - for everything) 

but it was worth getting sick 

for all those fantastic speeches in 

Hebrew I couldn’t understand :) 

Actually, on shabbos Yisrael Meir 

spoke in English and he was TER- 

RIFIC! Everybody loved it, he's so 

good! 

Speaking of shabbos Sheva Brochos, 

I have to give a big Yasher 

Koach to my M.I.L. for the major 

job of hosting allllll the Hexters 

and more! It was an amazing 

shabbos - kudos! 

The young couple was extremely 

young coupl-y with the records of 

showing up latenesses and completely 

spaced out zombishkiet. 

So cute. 

The Sheva Brochos at Chana Rechel’s 

house was really unbelievable. 

I made challah rolls and car- 

rot muffins and what not, and everybody 

contributed, but chana Rechel 

really outdid herself. ice 

vases, ice bowls, puff pastry swans 

in veggie sauce, home made ice 

cream cookie sandwiches,... it 

goes on... 



Chaim Mordechai and Deidra Bess 

came to that one and were very fun 

and humorous as usual. - even 

gave us a ride home cuz those 

good for nothings stole our car..... 


(No gripes here, no gripes...) 

While all this was going on by 

the way, JAM arrived with staff 

members Debbie Hantman, and 

Elisheva (Jawary) Dorfman and 

husband Steve! So exciting! 

Of course, I’ve hardly seen them 

since we’ve all been so busy, but 

Debbie’s been here a couple times 

and Eli is G-d willing coming over 

tonight to bake 7 batches of challah 

with me for tomorrow’s upcoming 

30 girls braiding challah at 

the Jacobsons! 

(YM thought we should call it 

"make bread with jam".. ha ha 

ha....) 

A couple nights ago we got to go 

to the Lieberman Bar Mitzvah- 

Mazal Tov, Klony and Yehudit 

and Ariel - and to the whole Lieberman 

mishpacha! It was really, 

really such a beautiful and fun 



event. 


Cousin Rivka from Haifa points out:

there were two Rivka Kellner's…” 

Also, major Mazal Tov to Aunt 

Tyra on graduating with your doctorate! 

We sat with Kayla and 

Avram Boruch Pitter, and visiting 

Rivky Kellner, as well as Uncle 

Butchie and Aunt Jolene, Rivka, 

and Avinoam and his Kallah, 

Rina! 

It was so nice to meet --- and so 

nice to see the Chaifa cousins 

again. 

We tried to do origami like Ariel- 

but he really had to help us with 

our birds. Suzy, it was really good 

to see you and the kids again - and 

Ruth, thanx for sitting with us 

when the Chaifa-ins left us! 

Dive, don’t worry, as I’m 

sure you heard, you got an 

honorable mention in Ariel’s 

speech, and you and Lauren 

were definitely missed. 

We got home from the Bar 

Mitzvah, and just as we 

we’re gonna head off to bed 

(about midnight) the newlyweds 

called that they were nearby 

and wanted to come over and visit. 

So they popped in for a quick minute 

which turned into 3 

hours....really fun hangin’ out with 

them.... don’t worry, that little 



teeny thing you see in YM’s hand 

is purely social...TRUST ME :) 

Anyway, it seemed that wasn’t

dinner newlywed time- 11pm... 

very normal. 

Soooo there hasn’t been too much 

normality around here lately but 

were trying. We’re having Rafi 

Cohn and co. this shabbos- 

one last time before he heads 

home...sniff! 

YM starts his Aish camp 

soon- wish him luck!
