Sub: Report on Public Awareness Programme <strong>at</strong> S G <strong>High</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>Valod</strong><br />

NPCIL, Kakrapar Gujar<strong>at</strong> Site particip<strong>at</strong>ed in Tapi District Science<br />

<strong>Exhibition</strong> <strong>at</strong> S G <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>, <strong>Valod</strong> (loc<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>at</strong> about 40 Kms from<br />

Site) from 21/09/12 to 22/09/12 as part of public awareness<br />

programme. The exhibition was part of st<strong>at</strong>e wide science exhibitions<br />

for the selection of entries for st<strong>at</strong>e level science exhibition.<br />

The exhibition was inaugur<strong>at</strong>ed by Collector, Tapi District.<br />

District Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Officer, Tapi. Other officials from educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

department and school teachers were present on the occasion.<br />

During his inaugural speech, the collector gave stress on energy<br />

conserv<strong>at</strong>ion; renewable energy sources and long term energy source<br />

i.e. <strong>Nuclear</strong> Energy.<br />

Total 5134 students studying up to 12 th Std., 233 teachers<br />

and 864 persons from general public visited NPCIL exhibition<br />

stall.<br />

NPCIL exhibits included display panels depicting various facets of<br />

nuclear energy, Anim<strong>at</strong>ed Process diagram on <strong>Nuclear</strong> <strong>Power</strong><br />

gener<strong>at</strong>ion, Reactor building model, gama-ray tracer etc. Gujar<strong>at</strong>i<br />

Movie “Ek h<strong>at</strong>o Mansukh” was screened to allay public apprehensions<br />

about nuclear energy. Students and teachers took keen interest in<br />

NPCIL exhibits. They were surprised to learn th<strong>at</strong> there are so many<br />

n<strong>at</strong>ural sources of radi<strong>at</strong>ion all around, Radi<strong>at</strong>ion is a fact of life and<br />

radi<strong>at</strong>ion dose, if any to public living in nearby areas of NPP is nothing<br />

as compared to radi<strong>at</strong>ion dose received by individuals from n<strong>at</strong>ural<br />

sources. Gamma ray tracer was used to demonstr<strong>at</strong>e th<strong>at</strong> even<br />

building m<strong>at</strong>erial like glazed tiles, Petromax lamp filaments emit<br />

gamma radi<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

It was noticed th<strong>at</strong> even the teachers were ill informed. Few<br />

teachers enquired about the range up to which radi<strong>at</strong>ion can affect<br />

public based on some inform<strong>at</strong>ion in 12 th science text book of Gujar<strong>at</strong><br />

St<strong>at</strong>e Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Board. They were eager to know about gener<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />

nuclear waste and problem of its disposal in safe manner. It is<br />

proposed to send the correct version of inform<strong>at</strong>ion to the concerned<br />

st<strong>at</strong>e Authorities to clear this mis-conception<br />

<strong>KAPS</strong> officials have explained the process of gener<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />

electricity in nuclear plants, gener<strong>at</strong>ion and disposal of nuclear waste<br />

and facts about radi<strong>at</strong>ion to the s<strong>at</strong>isfaction of all the visitors including<br />

teachers and students. Booklets in Gujar<strong>at</strong>i viz. <strong>Nuclear</strong> <strong>Power</strong><br />

Gener<strong>at</strong>ion, “Ek H<strong>at</strong>o Mansukh”-Part 1&2 were also distributed to the<br />

students & Teachers. The response of students and teachers was<br />

excellent and there were many requests for plant visit. All were<br />

informed th<strong>at</strong> they can send the request for the plant visit to the office,<br />

and the same will be arranged <strong>at</strong> the earliest.<br />

The exhibition was organised by S/Shri R K Dubey, K D Joshi, S<br />

S Wagh, A K Jain, Y J Prajap<strong>at</strong>i and Shailesh Nikam from NPCIL,<br />

Kakrapar Gujar<strong>at</strong> Site under the guidance of Training Superintendent.<br />

In the concluding session, NPCIL officials were welcomed on the<br />

dias and Principal S G <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>, <strong>Valod</strong> expressed his gr<strong>at</strong>itude to<br />
